Howl at the moon and enjoy it!
I am happy to announce that I have found a new werewolf series! 'Howling at the Moon' is the first in a trilogy and if the first book is anything to go by it will be a wonderful 3 books that I hope will grow into another series or a few more books!
Sophie Garou has everything : A great job, great clothes & a terrific boyfriend. However there is a slight problem...Sophie is a werewolf and when she has her time of the month you have more than a few mood swings to put up with!
She has been coping really well with the help of her human/witch mother. She cooks up enough Wolfsbane tea to keep things under control. However 4 times a year she has to make the change and that time is nearly here which is why Sophie isn't too pleased when she finds out it is also her one year anniversary and her boyfriend has plans for them. She is even less pleased to find that her mother is in prision for murder. Throw in some suspicious packages, a hot werewolf called Tom and a crazy secretary and Sophie has her work cut out for her.
This was a brilliant read and even though it was a little chick-lit like at times it was actually very supernatural Stephanie Plum. I really like the characters and the storyline was really good. I am looking forward to part two in this series 'On the Prowl' which is due out in Autumn. Maybe someone wants to send me an ARC for that one??? I am totally impressed!
Extremely poor urban fantasy
I should begin this review by clarifying that I have a great love of the urban fantasy genre and I am not a snob - if there are great characters, an exciting plot and decent writing, then I am easily pleased. However, 'Howling at the Moon' is a worryingly feeble attempt at detailing the life of a supernatural woman living in the human world, lazily cashing in on the genre's recent explosion in popularity.
What is perhaps most disappointing is that the premise itself is a good one - Sophie's isolation from other werewolves is a nice twist and there are various, potentially intriguing obstacles our 'heroine' must overcome. Unfortunately, the sheer number of difficulties she faces dilutes interest and there is never a real sense of crisis or danger - Sophie manages to amble through the events of the book without ever showing any real spark or cunning.
The lead character herself is completely unsympathetic and very hard to like or cheer for. Sophie's first person narrative is almost exclusively dedicated to recapping all the problems she faces (her blandly perfect and dimly unsuspecting human boyfriend, her potential promotion at her VERY IMPORTANT JOB, the paper thin hot male werewolf character who occasionally pops up and looks sexy, her psychic witch mother being arrested, etc. etc.) and when she is done recapping, she goes on to explain - in excruciating detail - just how difficult these problems are for her.
And don't get me started on the leg shaving...
Suffice to say, I won't be reading the sequels. If you like your urban fantasy to be absorbing, challenging, dark and exciting, you won't get your fix with this book.
A Howling Good Tale
I have to agree with the two previous reviews Karen MacInerney has created a fast paced and fun story that takes off as soon as you read the first page. She has created a wonderful world that mirrors our own with the inclusion of supernatural creatures.
Sophie Garou has a good life, great job working for a prestigious accounting firm, lovely best friend Lindsey who has Angelina Jolie's face and lips and a handsome boyfriend Heath who has aspirations for a political future. There is just a couple of slight problems, excessive hair growth (she should consider buying shares in Bic or Lady shaver) and she turns into a werewolf - no big deal.
The story starts out with Sophie's mother a wacky Rom (Gypsy) witch in jail accused of murdering a congressman with a poisoned love potion. The police firmly believe that Sophie's mother is the murderer and are not looking into any more leads in the case so it is up to Sophie and Lindsey to try and track down the real killer. Add into the mix a handsome werewolf Tom who sets all of Sophies animal urges into overdrive and you have a great read.
I will be looking forward to the next in the series and if the second book is as good as the first I will be looking forward to the third.
