Romance dressed up as a thriller. Okay plot, poorly written
The first thing anyone thinking about buying this book should be aware of is that it is published by "Warner Forever", and is marketed as "Romantic Suspense". In my ignorance, I thought I was buying a mystery/thriller novel so was bitterly disappointed.
The plot is basically an okay one: abused wife flees her husband and, together with her young son, starts a new life. The narrative kicks off about ten years later, when the husband discovers his wife is still alive and sets out to track her down.
However, the idea is let down by the painfully cliched dialogue, characterization and descriptions. It reads like something out of a cheap airport romance. I am aware this is the author's first novel, so perhaps her later books are better written. I recently had the misfortune to read one of Tess Gerritson's earliest efforts and it was of much the same calibre as this - and yet she has now matured into a gripping crime writer.
If you are looking for a Mills & Boony type thing, I imagine you might enjoy this. It has a strong, feisty female lead with a dark, brooding male love interest, both recovering from painful pasts.
If you are looking for a new crime writer, please do not touch this book. Within the first 50 pages I was already having to skip whole chunks of schmaltzy "romance" sections and by about two-thirds through, I basically just skimmed to the end to find out what happened.
Enjoyable
The book is about Caroline and her son Tom who ran away from her husband 7 years ago and were presumed dead and now have there own life together. When Caroline gets a new Boss called Max they are both drawn to each other and a relationship blooms but Caroline has to let go of the past and Max also has his own demons to overcome and this makes there relationship difficult.
Also Caroline's husband, who he a cop has figured out she is alive and is after her leaving a trail of destruction in his wake and is being chased by his fellow cops as they have figured out he is evil and after her and it is a race for them to find Caroline before he does!
I brought this book with the worry it would be a rip off of sleeping with the enemy but it was really quite good. I know that Karen Rose has written other books about some of the characters and I am interested to see what happens to them.
Tell Everyone!
Mary Grace Winters was nearly ki11ed by her husband more than once. Since he was cop, the only way out was to disappear and start a new life with her son far away from North Carolina. With new names and a new look, they lived in relative safety in Chicago for several years, but when the car she ditched is found, her husband realizes she isn't dead YET.
Max Hunter is her new boss, and he is YUMMY! It was love/lust at first sight for him and Caroline (formerly Mary Grace). Although the sparks are flying everywhere, both have many issues they need to resolve before they can think of a future together. Also, her son is terrified his mother will end up in another abusve relationship.
I like romantic suspense/thriller, and this is one of the best I've read. The pace was relentless, and once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. Who needs sleep, right? :) This novel is vilent, s3xy, sweet, and haunting. If you like Tino Georgiou's-The Fates, you will like this book.
