Product Description

The treatment of physical health problems is increasingly supplemented by psychological therapy, particularly in connection with long term treatment and the management of chronic or intractable problems. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is now recognised as the most effective approach for a wide range of mental and physical disorders, e.g. the treatment of anxiety/depressive disorders, management of pain and treatment of the psychological problems associated with cancer.

Although there are other books available on CBT for mental health problems and some which focus more generally on psychological management aspects of medical problems, this is the first to provide a general introduction to the methods and clinical application of CBT for the problems experienced by patients with chronic pain, cardiac disorders, surgical problems, diabetes, cancer and skin problems.

This book outlines how cognitive behavioural assessment, formulation and intervention strategies can be tailored to chronic medical problems. Formulation diagrams and extracts from treatment sessions are included. Professional and service development issues are covered in separate chapters. Some helpful self report measures are included as Appendices.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Chronic Medical Problems is a concise and accessible clinical text. It assumes some basic knowledge and practical experience of CBT and enables the reader to understand and tailor their practice to the needs of physically ill patients.

Editorial Reviews

Dr. Judith S. Beck, Director, The Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research, Philadelphia, USA and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania, USA.
"Dr. White has written an exceptional book. With a solid theoretical basis, this clearly written and useful book does an impressive job of instructing the reader in formulating cases at a macro and micro level and in using this formulation to plan therapy and select interventions for patients with various chronic medical problems. Excellent case examples, transcripts, and assessment instruments are provided. Even clinicians that primarily do not treat medical patients will benefit from studying this book."

Paul Kennedy, Academic Director, Oxford Doctoral Course in Clinical Psychology, Warneford Hospital, Oxford, UK
"There is growing recognition of the contribution of clinical health psychologists in the management of chronic medical conditions. Craig White applies Beck's cognitive model to a range of medical problems, including cancer, chronic pain, and cardiac disease. This is a readable, clinically focussed and practical guide, which uses relevant extracts from clinical sessions covering assessment, case level formulations and interventions. It will be of interest to all involved in clinical health psychology applications."

Robert L. Leahy, Ph.D. Editor, Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy: An International Quarterly President-Elect: International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy, and Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Cornell University, USA, and Director, American Institute for Cognitive Therapy.
"Craig White's Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Medical Problems is required reading for any clinician who works with patients who have difficulties related to cancer, pain, diabetes, dermatology, surgery or cardiac problems. Given the increased risk of these problems in our population, this important volume provides much needed information as to how to assess and treat the psychological adjustment that follows from chronic health issues. This book is well-organized, practical, clinically sensitive and extremely valuable in helping the clinician work with these complex issues."

Helpful and understandable clinically relevant text4
CBT for Chronic Medical Problems is a very useful book. It firstly outlines the rationale for using CBT with medical problems and gives helpful guidelines on both problem-level and case-level formulations. Each chapter discusses assessment and formulation for specific problems, illustrated with case examples from clinical practice. Some assessment measures are included and links are given to others. Whilst you may want to consult other texts for a more in depth approach this book is a great starting point.
