Product Description

We all have low moods from time to time. Usually, the mood passes after a few days and we get back to our normal way of living. We may say that we have been 'depressed', 'down in the dumps', 'fed up' or have had the 'blues'. But low moods like this are not what doctors call depression. Instead, they use the term to describe a more severe illness which a person has had for at least a few weeks, affecting the body as well as the mind. There has been an increase in the rates of depression over the last 40 years which may be the result of the way we live our lives now. The good news is that no matter what the cause of depression it can be treated and treated effectively. Most people who are depressed and have treatment get better.

Good basic, up-to-date summary by UK specialist4
A short book about depression, written by a UK psychiatrist. Much cheaper than other self-help books on depression. Being short can be an advantage, but also means there isnt much detail. That may suit some people and/or as an introduction (for both of whom it would be 5 stars) You will want something else if you want some detail- this could be a start

It provides a short overview of a wide range of topics. The straightforward style and short sections may make it a good choice if you have poor concentration. The layout of short lines can make it slightly tricky to read, but this is not a big problem.

Psychological therapies and counselling are only listed, rather than having more information about how they are used. There is more information about medication and other treatment options. The section of what will be provided by your GP is perhaps rather optimistic, but its worth knowing what should happen!

Good first understanding of depression5
This book is a concise and easy to understand way of learning about depression. It explains what depression is, the different types, helping yourself, treatment, medication, physical treatment, what to expect from your GP, woman and depression, grief and family /friends helping a depressed person. This book is good because it give you a great overview of everything you need to know about depression. This you can get another book to go into more detail on one aspect of this book.
