Rumours of plague threaten Cambridge again, ten years after the Black Death had almost laid waste to the town. Neither the church nor its priests had defended people from the disease and now they turn elsewhere for protection, to pagan ritual and magical potions. It is a ripe atmosphere to be exploited by the mysterious 'Sorcerer', an anonymous magician whose increasing influence seems certain to oust both civil and church leaders from power. One murder, another unexplained death, a font filled with blood, a desecreated grave - all bear the hallmarks of the Sorcerer's hand, only the identity of the magician remains a mystery. A mystery which Matthew Barthlomew must solve before he loses his reputation ...and his life.

Another enthralling installment
This is the 14th in the series -
It's amazing Susanna Gregory can write so many books with more or less the same characters and keep them so fresh and interesting.
Again set in Cambridge in the 1350's the town is polarised into two factions. Those for God and those who believe God let them down during the black death. Those of the latter persuasion are dabbling in the occult when there arises a Sorcerer with powers beyond what the normal practitioners have.
Matthew Bartholemew, our star medical practioner, is identified by some as the Sorcerer, and again he and brother Michael are drawn where they would rather not go.
Brilliantly written and again keeping you guessing to the very end, before the solution is revealed.
If you like Medieval mysteries, you'll certainly like this.
Very highly recommended.
devils disciple
susanna gregory as always does not disapoint the story has its usual twist and turns. with the surprise ending which has you thinking so that is who it is and why.so nice to see the character john clippesby back in the story again .i cant wait till june 09 for the next book
The Devils Disciples
A good mystery with more wit and humour than in past Bartholomew mysteries. The ending was a genuine surprise and the mediaeval historical details as good as they always are.
