Customer Reviews

Informative, Straightforward and Fun to Make4
In addition to a set of easy to make recipes, this book covers making your own tinctures, decoctions, oils and a set of 'base'recipes, which it shows you how to customise to suit your skin.
Once you have read through the recipes and reference pages you can select just one or two essential oils that suit you skin to get started. I already had quite a few of the ingredients in - e.g. herbs, honey, witch hazel, clay, lavender, coconut, oils, milk, salt, bicarb but I haven't got round to trying the recipes with beeswax or emulsifier in yet (things that I will have to go out and find!)
It has a few recipes under each subject (it doesn't cover soap), and a third of it is the reference section so I think I will be going back to this book a few times. I may try another in the series as it was quite well thought out and informative.

Beware - it is an exact copy of the Make Your Own Cosmetics by Neal Yard's1
This book is undoubtedly good however you do not need 2! I bought this one because it from 2007 (I already had the other one). It is EXACTLY the same, 144 pages, same exact recipes. The front cover says fully revised edition and even the forward from the author hasn't changed from 1999. Please do not misunderstand, it is a great recipe book for cosmetics, I just find it quite misleading that they are the same book with two different titles.

good, but slightly disappointing3
Overall, it is a good book for a wide range of cosmetic products -there are quite a few recipes in it I would like to try, but you may have to invest more money in various ingredients that are not readily available in shops, such as wheatgerm oil, cosmetic clay, various essential oils, etc. The reason I couldn't give it five stars was that it didn't provide a satisfying recipe for soap and shampoo. What it basically recommends is that you use existing shampoos from the supermarket as a base and add to those the ingredients of your choice. I would have liked to find out a good natural formula without chemical ingredients or presevatives, even if the final product had a shorter shelf life. The book is nicely put together, good photography, but not for someone who is seriously thinking about making 100% natural, affordable cosmetic products.
