Iris, of course, dominates this album
Firts of all, I have to be honest; I bought this album purely for the single "Iris" which is just one of the most beautiful songs ever written, period. Because the single format for Iris is more expensive than this album, my choice was made to get DIZZY UP THE GIRL. Having now had it for a while, I can say that I have been surprised by the album.
One of my favourites is "Black Balloon". This is a quieter song compared to some of the other tracks, with really beautiful lyrics. Although it will never be Iris, it is a very good song in its own right.
"Bullet Proof" is also notable. The only problem I have with this particular track is the diction of Rzeznik - if I didn't have the CD sleeve with the lyrics on, I am not sure I would have known what he was saying in the first sentence of the chorus. But that is only a minor gripe.
"Dizzy" and "Slide" are also the other two most notable songs. As the two opening tracks, they do their job well. Dizzy begins with angsty lyrics accompanied by great drums. The chorus is fab; simple and catchy - it is a song that should get you singing along. Slide has a more mellow feel to it. To me, I think it is slightly more tight than Dizzy. Although it doesn't have a catchy chorus like Dizzy, Slide tells more of a story than Dizzy. Its not quite so angsty, rather the emotion is more hidden.
Then, of course, there is the track "Iris". This is undoubtedly the best song on the entire album. I'm sure you will have heard it by now - even Ronan Keating did a cover not so long back! The lyrics and the music are just fantastic - this song really is perfection. Although it is not as fleshed out as some of the others - by that, I mean that there are actually fewer lines in the song than some others - but this takes nothing away from it. Iris is definitely the song that people go away from this album remembering.
The only problem with having such a song on an album like this, is that it can mean that the rest of the album then becomes a bit of a disappointment, to say the least.
In a sense, this is how I came away from it - after hearing the moments of true masterpiece that they can produce, I did feel let down by the rest of the songs, to a degree. However, with the other 4 songs that I have mentioned, they have salvaged something.
Worth it for Iris, if nothing else.
An outstanding all round album.
I first heard this album 5 or 6 years ago, and decided then it was one of the best albums I had heard, and is as good now as it was on the first listen.
Almost every song is a strong, especially the highlights, such as Iris, name, black balloon, broadband and slide.
The goo goo dolls are not well known in the UK, like they are in the US, but as all the upcoming tour dates have sold out already, over a month before the dates, it seems they do have a great following here too!
This is still my favourite of the seven or so albums they now have, but all of the others are worth checking out too.
As someone said earlier, I have no idea why this album is import only, buy it now, and help the goo goo dolls become more well known over in the UK!
Goo Goo Dolls
I have all the goo goo dolls albums, and I have o say they are the best band I have ever heard. With this being the best goo goo dolls album to date. Songs such as dizzy, slide, broadway, black balloon, bullet proof, all eyes on me, acoustic #3, amigone and of course Iris, make this album a must get for anyone. You may well have noticed that I have mentioned pretty much the whole album and true it's nearly impossible to find an album which has all the songs equal to each other. Well tis album is just that. Gutterflower is alnother amazing Goo album, but doesn't quite come up to the standard of Dizzy up the girl. If you like bands like Switchfoot, Vertical Horizon, the Calling, Lifehouse, Athenaeum and Familiar 48, like me, then you're just going to Love this. (...)
