Editorial Reviews

Review
"What makes great leaders great? That′s the question Burt Nanus attempts to answer in Visionary Leadership (and does so quite well, by the way). But if you′re thinking this is going to be another one of those nebulous, touchy–feely, here′s–the–kind–of–charisma–it–takes–to–get–ahead–in–business books, you′re only partly right. Visionary Leadership is all about the one essential component of great leadersnamely, being a visionarybut it′s not a theoretical treatise. Nanus writes not only of the necessity of a vision to your business′ success, but also how to develop and sustain that vision.′′

"Likely to prove the most important management book of the year.′′ ––Edward Cornish, president, World Future Society

"Ideas with vision have power and magic that carry those ideas beyond the people who create them. Burt Nanus shows us how to find such vision.′′ ––U.S. Senator Bob Graham

From the Author
Origins of this book
I originally wrote this book to follow up a work with Warren Bennis called "Leaders: The Strategies for Taking Charge." Readers of that book asked me why I thought vision was so critical to effective leadership and how, specifically, they could generate visions that would make a real and powerful difference in their own organizations.

This book was the result. Fortunately, it was well received by professionals in the field. In the year it was published (1992), "Visionary Leadership" was listed as one of the best management books of the year by Library Journal. It was both a Book of the Month Club and a Fortune Book Club Selection, and was eventually translated into six other languages.

After you've read the book, I'd be pleased to hear about your reactions. Or, if you use the techniques described in this book, or in its two companion volumes on "The Vision Retreat", please share your experiences with me. Who knows - there may be a sequel!

Customer Reviews

Top quality insights to meaningful leadership.5
It's not often that an author keeps "topping" previous work in terms of refining intricate concepts, but that is what Nanus has done here. If you are in a leadership position, the diagram of the essential components of leadership in the first chapter is alone worth the price of admission. These are insights by someone who has studied and analyzed what it takes to be a "facilitative" leader--not a boss leader, not a manager, but a true "inspirer" of others who can harness the energies and maximize the focus of an organization--a "leader of leaders"--this book essentially lays out how to maximize BOTH alignment and empowerment----this is a great book.
