I've Just Lost A Friend
I read this book from cover to cover in a day. Corble has a great style, imparting his knowledge effortlessly whilst making it easy for the layman to come along on the journey with him. I bought the book as I wanted to know a bit more about canals, and now I do - a lot more, but really the book is about the man. Corble tells Brindley's story as just that - a story. There's plenty of characterisation, background, anecdotes and trivia so that by the time I reached the end I felt I'd got to know the man and even felt a bit emotional - I felt I'd lost a friend! This would make a great film, plenty of scope for cameos with people like Josiah Wedgwood, an errant Duke and even a young bride for a splash of romance. Who would play Brindley though? Alan Armstrong?
James Brindley First Canal Builder
A very readable account of the life this fascinating man. A must for anyone interested in the building of canals or, like me, the industrial revolution.
