The 'Bible' for 1d Black collectors
When I first came across this book I suddenly realised how many different variations of the 1d Black there were. As a child I had been bought a 1d Black for my birthday - it turned out to be from Plate 4 (thanks to Percy Litchfield's book). Since then I have been collecting 'unplated' 1d Blacks and have found them easy....very easy to plate using this book. I now have one from each plate, including a plate 11 (rare/expensive) which I picked up quite cheaply and was able to identify with ease.
For anyone new to 1d Black plating this book is set out showing the main characteristics for each plate + the constant flaws ('O' & 'Ray'). The final section lists all the checkletters from AA to TL and each separate checkletter has an easily tabulated section to ascertain the correct plate the stamp was produced from.
You can also use this book to plate the early 1d Reds: those that were printed from the 'black plates'.
I only wish the same had been done for rest of the 1d Red imperforates.
Super book - worth it's weight in gold....or is that Black Gold?
