Spiritual Father, Spiritual Journey5
"John Paul The Great: Remembering a Spiritual Father" is Peggy Noonan's story of her spiritual journey under the unknowing tutelage of Pope John Paul the Great. I started this book with the expectation of reading a biography of John Paul. Instead I was treated to an insight into the soul of Peggy Noonan. This book is much more about Peggy Noonan's spiritual journey than about than about John Paul. Peggy tells about her relatively
non-religious background and her growth into an insightful and spiritual woman as John Paul gently guides her in the discovery into the important things of life.

In this book we get a blend of John Paul's life and Peggy's increasing knowledge of him his influence on her. She reflects on his spiritual guidance and give the reader the benefit of her observations on issues such as the pedophilia scandals in the Church in the United States. She shares her impression of the role of nuns, young priests and the hierarchy. She tells us who she thinks are the problems and in whom she finds the hope for the Church, and yes, she finds hope.

One test of a book is whether it whets your appetite for more. This book meets that test. This is the first book by Peggy Noonan which I have read. I want to read more. I see her as a woman who looks into the heart of a matter, not just into the superficial or the "What's in it for me" aspects. She presents a refreshing change from the public stereotype of the New-York Beltway insider to whom spirituality is either a subject of ridicule or something for which they have no time. I want to know what she "Saw At The Revolution" and how she views other parts of life. I have started reading her columns in the hopes of finding commentary drawn from a different perspective and have not been disappointed. I look forward to reading other books which she has written. "John Paul The Great" is an enticing introduction into a mind which I want to explore further. I am confident that it can do the same for you.
