This guide gives you the tools and techniques to make the right impact first time, every time. Looking for your first job? Reinventing yourself for promotion or a fresh start? Going back to work? Whether you're a freelance, corporate employee, CEO or entrepreneur, the principles are the same: not only be someone people can do business with successfully, but look and act the part in an effective package.
Maybe you don't have certain skills or abilities, but you've got the ambition. Or you know how to negotiate the deal, but you've got to get that foot in the door - and keep it there. Don't be written off simply because you don't look or act the part: follow these methods, tried, tested and proven at the highest level.
Mary Spillane's practical advice for men and women includes worksheets to assess your priorities, manageable checklists, case studies of her ideas at work, plus tips and guidelines for interviews, meetings and presentions - from clothing and accessories to sexual politics, body language and manners - formal and smart casual - and international relevance for world class style. You won't find your personality repressed: you'll find it reinforced for success.

From the Author
I had to write this book.
This project was thrust upon me---not by my publisher but by my clients. I have worked as an image consultant and performance coach for over 15 years and have had the priviledge of helping people make more of themselves. In the process, they have helped me make more of me!
I also wrote this book from the heart as someone who has branded and rebranded herself a few times and is going through her latest branding exercise with the publication of this book, having sold one business and now creating another---ImageWorks.
Try to be as dispassionate as you can when you read the book. Past rejections and failures can blind us to future possibilities. Learn from some of the case studies, do the questionnaires and audits of your image, get input from people you trust. Together, we'll look at your brand values, define your uniqueness and see how well you are promoting yourself.
Successful branding comes from within---who you are today as well as the dreams of the kind of person you want to be. You can live your dreams if you put in the effort. You'll have fun and be richer for it; figuratively, that is. Your bank balance might be in for a shock.

A powerful, fresh approach to optimising what you have
BRANDING YOURSELF has got to be THE image "change management" manual for professional individuals, wanting to optimise their potential. As a Business Image consultant in SA I have found the holistic approach that Ms Spillane has adopted in order to revamp your "presence" both practical and well balanced.
For business' in South Africa who are grappling with the interpretation & implementation of Business casual - this book offers a logical and practical process to arriving at the most suitable solution. Furthermore the principles shared in the book can be easily adapted from London and New York to Johannesburg and Cape town.
I think that this business manual gives new meaning to the old adage - "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail"
A crucial read for anyone serious about succeeding in life
Want to make a 'new start'? This is the book for you!
Having read Mary Spillane's first two books, when I was faced with how to tell a colleague gently that I didn't feel her image was quite right for our company, I suggested that we should go to a Colour Me Beautiful seminar together. There Mary answered my prayers: somewhat to my amazement, and without any prompting from me, she immediately picked out my colleague from the audience and told her kindly but firmly what she could do to improve her appearance. The few minutes with Mary set my colleague off on a journey of self-discovery and renewal: chucking out her old clothes and going on a solo diving holiday. Her husband was not amused!
Mary's thought-provoking and very readable new book, 'Branding Yourself' goes a step further by encouraging people not just to 'look the part' but to see themselves as a 'brand'. I have 'recreated' myself a few times (although I still have two eyes, a nose and one mouth) and it can be both an exhilarating and at the same time daunting experience.
This book offers help and encouragement to people wishing to make a 'new start' with plenty of useful advice on how to survive (and hopefully prosper) in a competitive job market.
Just what you'd expect from Mary Spillane
I met Mary 10 years ago when 'in between' jobs and found her medicine on my image tough to swallow but invaluable. Have used her in my company and recommended to other CEOs. Her latest book is particularly useful to British men who are so reluctant to ask for and accept feedback. Read the tips on Presentations and Voice projection if you want to be more effective in meetings. A fast study and very useful.
