Quiet greatness
I have been discovering John Coltrane for the past three years now (I was mainly into rock, blues and country), but I am glad I started digging in jazz too. His music keeps amazing me. He just never seemed to stop evolving.

What strikes me in "Ballads" is that Coltrane knew how to make relatively straightforward, simple melodies work as well. If you know him from the complexity and ravishing energy of "A love supreme", for example, this is quite a change.

It shows how rich a musician he was. It is the same Coltrane but with hardly any notes, so to say. Like when you discover that Picasso made classic, beautiful portraits as well. Heartfelt, searching, honest, quiet greatness. To be played on rainy sunday mornings or late saturday nights at home.
