Manufacturer's Description
The Philips GC7220 Pressurised Steam Generator can reduce the time you spend on clothes care by 50%. Just think of all the quality time you could spend with the children, rather than their school uniforms. Think of the lunches with friends, the relaxing evenings spent in front of the TV — not in front of the ironing board.
| How does the Philips GC7220 make your ironing easier and faster? As a pressurised steam generator, it does far more than a normal iron or non-pressurised steam generator can ever do. But it’s not just about heat or steam — it’s also about how deeply the steam can penetrate in order to remove even the most stubborn creases. For the same price as a non-pressurised steam generator, the Philips GC7220 Pressurised Steam Generator uses 3.5 bars of powerful pressure to expel steam deeper into your garments, relaxing the fabric and helping you remove all creases in a single stroke. We think this is something well worth talking about, but why not try the Philips GC7220 yourself and let us — and your friends — know what you think? After all, now you just might have some free time on your hands…81 minutes a week, perhaps? | ![]() |

recommend this iron at the price I paid
I paid around £80 for this iron in November 07.
The iron is excellent, plenty of steam and makes light work of cotton and linen etc. Vertical steaming is easy and effective as well, particularly useful for polyester fabrics. Ideal for my regular ironing jobs.
Downside: There is no control over the steam, it is either on or off.
The volume of steam is such that I have had to purchase a regular iron for my dressmaking hobby as it would not be possible to make small creases using steam without burning my fingers.
Occasionally when the iron is first turned on some brown scale stains appear and I have learned to iron the darker things first and save the whites until the iron has been running for 10 mins.
Also, the iron is noisy when the pump comes on and off as I guess all of these types of iron are and so it would not be suitable to use in the livingroom whilst people are watching TV. It can make a damp patch on the floor beneath the ironing board as there is such a volume of steam and I do think you would need a mesh type ironing board.
At the price I paid I am very happy with the iron but if I were to buy another I would be looking for steam control and would probably have to pay a lot more.
Hope this helps you choose.
Well worth the money!
I also got to try this iron through BzzAgent and thought that here would be a good place to share my opinion as I myself always check on Amazon for my product reviews before making a purchase, even if I am buying from elsewhere.
Firstly, I will get the most important statement out of the way - this iron certainly did cut my ironing time down AND make it easier!
I have never tried a steam generator iron before and didn't feel I could justify paying that much money for an iron. Since trying this one however I have been raving to all the ironers I know that they must 'treat' themselves LOL!
I will start with the good points I noted:
I usually iron once a week for the 4 people in my family, which takes about 2.5 hours with my high-end standard Tefal iron. With this I easily get it all done in 1.5 hours and feel less stressed at the end of it!
As stated before, this iron doesn't have a water squirter, but I personally didn't need one using this iron. With my previous iron, I found it very hard to iron jeans and linen items and had to keep spraying water until my thumb ached! With this one, though, I just turned the temperature up to 'high' and used the steam function. The steam button you simply press(like an electronic switch, not a pressure based one that could give you a repetitive strain injury!) for a very impressive amount of steam or if you slide the button at the same time it will lock into the steaming function so that you can continue to iron as normal.
Using the cup supplied, I filled the tank up with 3 cups of water before I started and that lasted me the whole pile.
The narrow front tip of the iron plate made it much easier to get into the corners of shirts and the kids clothes.
The main base of the iron has an on/off switch - such a basic but necessary thing I always wished my previous irons had!
Now the not-so-good points:
The whole unit is quite cumbersome in general (for storing away), though I don't know if it is any more cumbersome than any other steam generator iron. It was more of a chore to store away than its standard-sized predecessor but I had enough cupboard space to accommodate it fine.
I read about the noise of the unit before receiving the iron and was expecting it to be really bad, but - though it is noticeable - I don't think it is at all bad. My (practically scientific) test was that I was doing my ironing in the same room as my Mum-in Law when she was watching TV and she didn't say anything at all about the noise! I could also hear the TV fine so the iron is not so loud that it would interfere with your social life!
The most noticeable problem I had with this iron is that the main power cord should definitely be longer. Where I do the ironing in my house, i may consider getting a small extension lead but it isn't a necessity at the moment.
Well I hope that I have converted anyone reading this to the steam generator club and resolved any doubts you may have had so GO FOR IT!
Steam Generator Irons
I recently acquired this iron and overall the product does make removing creases from fabrics (especially heavier materials) a lot easier than with a traditional steam iron.
One of the things this iron lacks is a directional water spray that you find on most steam irons, as there are still some stubborn creases such as peg marks which seem resilient to the pressurised steam function of this model and required that I manually applied water to them in order to remove them completely.
The operational noises of this iron came as a huge surprise as I was not expecting it to be so loud. I hope I get more used to this, as I found that I was reluctant to use the steam function when other people were around. This is definitely one of the main downsides with this iron.
The base unit also makes the iron very bulky to store and quite awkward to empty of water when not being used - I also found that the mains cable to the base unit could have been a little more generous.
Overall the iron does what it said it would and made ironing quicker and will much improve the chore of ironing larger items, such as bedding for example.
It is quite expensive when compared to current traditional steam irons and if I am perfectly honest, I believe that I personally would have been just as happy using a high quality traditional steam iron as this one.
Would rate it 8/10 overall.
