Few Problems
The family tree has a great layout and is easy to use and input information, but I have had many problems. I feel it should not have been released until problems were sorted. My main problem was it is not compatable with HP printers unless you go around the houses and the help pages and people to get it sorted. I have also been unable to register for the free months ancestry membership.
Excellent
Who Do You Think You Are? Family Tree Maker (New Version)
This is very good and only gets four stars because I couldn't get the free month's membership of Ancestry. I suspect the link is missing. I have had the previous version for some years. This updates it very well, making the whole thing prettier and more friendly. Before it was a bit 'school project'...it worked but not much fun.
You can very easily with this start off your family tree. You don't really need the big pack, it only gives you a bit more literature and some givaway Cds. Some of the literature on the big one is helpful if you are new I suppose.
I think this is the best on the market. I suggest that when you install it you disable the choice to "automatically seach the internet". You will otherwise be deluged with possible matches from Winsconsin in 1648 etc. Wait until you have got the sense of it before going on the net. The search of Ancestry is very useful and as a serious family history researcher I find an annual subscription essential, although there are pay-a-as-you go schemes. But it does have errors and as it is American, translation of British censuses is imaginative. FindmyPast is better for reliable translation of the census.
It does work first time with my HP printer sso the reviewer who complained about that may be reassured. It takes time to set it up and mine is already geared up to the old version.
This new version gives a better panorama of your family tree and is quite exciting to work with. It can be complicated but I think its really good. It's more 'personal'. I recommend it .
Wish they'd stop "improving" things
I had to buy this in case my old Generations software became obsolete but all I want is a bog standard family tree. It's hard to glide through the generations and you end up in places you didn't want to go. I haven't managed to work out how to put the cause of death on whilst with my old software I could see all my facts at a glance. You don't see all the children displayed on the tree either and have to fiddle about to get them up. I am amazed how it links up with ancestry and does your work for you and it has flagged up links with other trees on ancestry which is useful if people ever responded. We didn't buy the most up to date version but I'm glad I saved the money and got this one as I prefer to keep things as simple as possible and i suspect this is the best I could hope for.
