Synopsis
With its deft combination of humour and heart, this single-camera sitcom is a both a critical and cult favourite. SCRUBS stars Zach Braff as J.D., an eager doctor at Sacred Heart Hospital. With J.D. as its narrator, the show frequently dips into surrealism as it shows his strange thoughts and daydreams. The rest of the characters on SCRUBS are equally eccentric: best friend Turk (Donald Faison), bossy nurse Carla (Judy Reyes), J.D.'s reluctant mentor Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley), the anxiety-ridden ex-girlfriend Elliot (Sarah Chalke), and J.D.'s arch nemesis, known simply as 'Janitor' (Neil Flynn).
This fantastic collection includes series 1 to 7 of the highly successful, long-running show. The diverse back-catalogue of guest stars include John Ritter, Brendan Fraser, Heather Locklear, Heather Graham, Colin Farrell, Michael J Fox, Jason Bateman, Cheryl Hines, Elizabeth Banks, Dave Foley, and many more.
Customer Reviews
Hold off, perhaps...
Scrubs is one of the best tv shows we've ever had the good fortune to watch: it is consistently laugh out loud funny (with the exception of the finale of season 7), and the talent of its cast is often under-rated when it's relegated to "sit com". But in amongst the belly laughs, there are moments that will make you think and make you cry, and every now and then, you'll be struck by just how excellent everyone involved is, from the main stars, to the myriad guests. Scrubs, ultimately, is pretty much unbeatable. As such, any Scrubs fan will already have the first 6 seasons, with the 7th on order. But, for the purist, having them all in one box-set is too good an oppotunity to pass up.
However, another season (at least one) has been confirmed, so it may be a little premature. Presumably there will be another box-set after season 8 (reputed to be Braff's last), and that will be the one to buy. The 10-season Friends box-set came after the final episode, and I would have liked to see the folks over at Sacred Heart do it the same way, as if you wait for the ultimate box-set, this one is made redundant and a waste of a substantial sum of money.
By the same token, there is currently a seasons 1-6 box-set which (as I write) is £65.99, making it cheaper to buy that and season 7 independently. I don't for a second believe fans are being intentionally ripped off, but I don't think we need lose money, either. So I'll certainly be waiting for the complete 8 season pack before I splash out on a box-set.
Nevertheless, this is hours and hours and hours and hours of Scrubs and that will never deserve anything less than 5 stars.
Scrubs is Laugh-out-Loud Hilarity
Sacred Heart, a hospital full of zany and whacky staff, becomes the main centre of Doctor John Dorian - AKA J.D. when he arrives as a fresh faced resident, aside his hip confident best friend Chris 'Turk', a surgeon.
J.D. is full of ideals of how things will be when he takes up his residency - in fact, his head is full of cut-to fantasies about what he expects life will be like - but he arrives on his first day to find that he is very unprepared for how life as a real doctor is going to be; he fumbles with needles, he's a deer in the headlights when being asked to make a diagnosis, and he's having a tough time making decisions when it comes to life and death for his fatally ill patients.
But he discovers he's not the only medical resident that's suffering to come to grips with the job, as new resident Eliott Reid - a know-it-all neurotic girl with a boy's name - proves that you can know all the answers and still be scared enough to hide in the supply closet instead of facing up to responsibilities. Not only does he bond with Eliott, he quickly begins to fall in love with the cooky blonde, despite her many short-comings and superior attitude.
J.D. also meets his new mentor who will coach him through his transition, Doctor Perry Cox, a seemingly mean and verbally insultive man who will demean J.D. every chance he gets. Beneath it all, though, J.D. still sees that although Dr. Cox has a hard and vicious exterior which makes him a feared loner in the hospital, that the man has a heart of gold beneath it all, and J.D. will constantly strive for any kind of approval he can get from this man, his chosen 'father figure'.
In addition to these people J.D. also meets the man he will ONLY ever know as 'The Janitor', a looming giant of a man who admittedly has it out for him and will jump on any opportunity to make J.D. look silly, foolish, or feel bad.
Chris Turk, on the other hand, J.D.'s best friend and room-mate, is having a ball in surgery, although admits despite being quite capable of his job, he's constantly disgusted and afraid of what he does. J.D. is slightly jealous of how easily Turk manages to slide into the hospital and fit in with everything going on - enough, even, to start dating the beautiful and feisty nurse, Carla, who has been secretly coaching J.D. (whom she affectionately refers to as 'Bambi'), through his procedures.
One of the highlights of this series is, although very funny and then depressingly sad at times, it has the power to veer completely off what's happening in the form of a fantasy sequence from J.D.'s point of view, letting us see the hilarious and unexpected things J.D. thinks could happen or would like to happen in various situations. The series also tends to follow J.D.'s train of thoughts and we hear inside his head often (although occasionally it will move off into other character's thoughts), so it's easy to feel for J.D. as you can really get to know his character just by how he thinks rather than what he says.
Full of incredibly clever, and incredibly stupid dialogue, interesting characters.
This box set is a steal for the money right now, so I'd say go for it. It has many watchable - and RE-watchable - hours of entertainment to sit and enjoy. Go for it, you won't be disappointed.
"Listen Here Newbie"
Scrubs is the story of Sacred Heart, a hospital that really could be anywhere in America, with hilarious JD, John Dorian, a doctor who started his career in SH as an intern. His best friend Turk is a surgeon, and they have a great rapport together - they also make a great comedy duo. Turk is in love with Carla Espinosa - a nurse who's no push over. They all work with neurotic Dr Perry Cox, who just seems to be very abrupt with people - but under that hard shell he does seem to be caring, and does have a conscience. He just hates showing it. He's married to Jordan, who's a bit cold at the best of times, there's a real love-hate relationship between the pair, which often boils over in the hospital. Perry doesn't really like Dr Elliott Reid, who could be best described as a dizzy blonde but she's got a big heart and is quite a lovable character.
The funniest character is head of medicine Dr Bob Kelso, who often says things like "who has two thumbs and doesn't give a rats..." I think he's one of the funniest characters alongside the janitor, who's really just very envious of JD - even though he pretends to hate JD I think they're desperate to be best friends.
This is one of the best light-hearted comedies on TV, which does sometimes get serious and makes you question yourself and what you would do if you were them. I like the way music plays a great part in the show, and cut sequences and JD's wandering mind. I also like the chemistry between all the characters and the nutty things Elliott does it also very humorous. The special effects are also amazing - the best being when JD and Turk were Siamese Twins.
Some of the finest episodes include the one where a woman comes in singing everything she says; the janitor locking JD in a water tank for the day; the one where JD and Turk try and get their kids to be lovers and the one where JD is listening to music and he thinks everyone is singing along to his tape.
This is really a must-have box set, all 7 series are here and even though others have said the later series are not as funny as the first 4, I think they all have their own special qualities. The extras are pretty good too, with commentaries, documentaries and interviews with various cast members. You will also find deleted scenes and bloopers.
This is one of the finest comedies since NBC put out Seinfeld at the end of the 80s - and I'm just hoping that series 8 which is meant to be due on American TV next year is just as good. I really feel that maybe it's time to go on a high note, and the gang shouldn't spoil the broth, but it will be good to see more adventures from JD, Turk, Carla and Elliott.
Highly recommended.
