Manufacturer's Description:
26 years after WALKMAN created a revolutionary music lifestyle, the new Sony 8GB WALKMAN will now redefine it. Simply called `WALKMAN', the new digital music player from Sony features spectacular ergonomic design and an exciting range of intelligent features that allow the user to enjoy music in a totally new way. Sony WALKMAN is a true extension of the user's personal taste and musical preferences. At the press of a button, the `Artist Link' function will search every artist, album and song stored on the device and offer suggestions of artists and bands closely linked to the genre of music being played at the time.

The 8GB NW-A1200 Sony WALKMAN features two new shuffle functions. By selecting `My Favorite Shuffle', the device automatically selects the most listened to 100 songs and plays them at random. The `Time Machine Shuffle' function randomly selects a year and plays all of the songs from that particular year that are currently held on the device. Featuring an advanced organic EL 1.5" display, Sony WALKMAN not only incorporates a range of great features, it also offers the ultimate in ease of use through an appealing user interface and fantastic visibility.

Once switched on, a mobile phone style `Home' menu appears offering nine different options that can be selected via the four-way directional button. These include `Music Library', `Play Mode', `Initial Search', `Intelligent Shuffle', `Favorite 100', `Play History', `Settings', `Playlist' and `Now Playing'. Music can be searched in a variety of ways, via `Genre', `Artist', `Album', `Song', `Release Date', `Rating' and `Recently Transferred', all of which can be scrolled through to enable users to find their music faster and easier. Sony WALKMAN records three years of playback history that can be searched and also features the first ever `Initial Search' on a hard disc device, allowing the user to scroll from A-Z for ultimate ease of use.

alongside Sony's new range of MP3 Players comes a new version of their music file management application software, SonicStage CP. The software enables users to download music files onto a PC and transfer them to multiple digital music players such as the popular WALKMAN® family. With SonicStage CP, music lovers can manage their music files with an increased variety of codec technologies. In addition to ATRAC, ATRAC Advanced Lossless, MP3 and unsecured WMA, the new SonicStage CP software is compatible with AAC codec, making it possible to collectively manage music files stored in a variety of codec technologies according to each user's hardware and systems environment.

This new development makes it much easier to download as well as transfer music to a number of different music players (although WMA and AAC files with protected copyright cannot be transferred). The new software enables high-quality recordings from CD to AAC format at a bitrate of 80~320kbps. Also, with this new software package, all sound files formatted in 3gp, mp4 and m4a can be imported onto a PC.

The latest feature introduced with SonicStage CP is Sony's "Artist Link" feature. Currently built into the CONNECT Player and WALKMAN® "A series", this new feature will be available for use on PCs with Sonic Stage CP as well as compatible digital music players. By clicking the "link" button on the Sonic Stage CP screen while playing music, the artist link window appears and randomly selects related songs for playback. SonicStage CP will also allow music-lovers to save and manually edit these selections and even transfer the data to compatible WALKMAN devices.

Fairly good3
I bought my sony mp3 directly from the sony online shop. It came quickly and for a few months It was ace I had no problems. After the few months I noticed the battery life wasnt lasting very long. I have hardley used it since as Ive gone back to using the CD player lol. It is a lovely lookin and easy to use mp3 player but it does have its faults.

Second Sony MP3 player that has broken2
I bought one of these in Currys and it died after six months. I couldn't charge it at all. Took it back to Currys and they said that as it was discontinued all they would do is give me a similar one - they offered 1GB when mine was 8. Clearly their one year guarantee isn't worth much, let alone the three year one which I had foolishly paid for.

I sent it back to Sony for repair and they sent a bill for £30 saying it was my fault it had broken as it had had water damage. The walkman had been nowhere near any water and hadn't even been to a humid country so this is nonsense. But I have to pay £30 for them to look at it apparently. Needless to say I won't be paying £30 to get a broken Walkman back. The other MP3 Walman I bought previously also died after about a year as well, with no explanation.

Sadly I feel I now have to resort to buying an iPod. I have resisted this as I have always felt that the success of them was down to excellent marketing rather than quality, and had believed that Sony was bound to get it right. How wrong I was...

Oh and the software is irritating as well, yes..

NW A12004
This mp3 can be annoying as many people say with the font being too big which makes the viewing hard etc. But i think all that can be forgotten because sony's compression of songs to Atraac3plus is great, i currently have just over 2000 songs on this player and still have 3gb of memory left to add to.
