Product Description

After a thirty-year career as high profile vet, columnist, presenter and author, Bruce Fogle - the UK's bestselling cat and dog writer - decided to leave urban Britain and take a journey with his dog Macy. Travelling in the footsteps of the great American novelist, John Steinbeck, who published "Travels with Charley" - his standard poodle - in the '60s, Fogle set off in search of the North America of his childhood. Would he, after all this time, be able to work out whether home meant the UK or America? Would he find the welcoming, peaceful backwaters of his youth unchanged? Together with Macy, Fogle retraced Steinbeck's steps through the length of North America, meeting people, cadging meals, and indulging in some of the world's best dog-walking territory. What Bruce found in a changing America surprised and delighted him. What Macy found (thousands of miles of unspoilt wilderness) made her very happy, and hungry. This is an entertaining and evocative journey in the company of a very, very happy dog.

A Must for Dog Lovers5
If you are a "dog" person then this is definately a book for you. Recreating Steinbecks Travels with Charlie, Bruce Fogle sets off across America, accompanied by his faithfull companion Macy the Golden Retriever. A great travelogue in addition, this book made me almost want to jump in a camper van myself and head off into the wilderness.

lacklustre2
I love books about animals but I found this a lacklustre read . Fogle does not come across as being a vet empathic to all animals...he writes with glee about choosing a lobster in a bar to be boiled alive for his supper, than later he describes using live grasshoppers to stick on his fishing hooks.

The book is not really about his dog Macey, but rather about him and his opinions as he travels the states. You don't get a sense that the author really connects with the environment or the wildlife and that makes the book too clinical for my taste.

I wondered if he had an editor but as he gives credit to her, he must have. Grammar errors throughout, and the text jumps from one topic to another in a haphazard way.
