Product Description

This is the remarkable true story of how one man saved the stray dogs of Afghanistan. In a remote outpost of Now Zad, in Helmand Province, Pen Farthing and his troup of young Royal Marines survive frequent engagements with the Taliban and forge links with the local community. Pen's tour of duty will change his life forever, but for entirely unexpected reasons ...Appalled by the horrors of a local dog fight, he intervenes to free the victims. One of these dogs finds his way into the Marine compound - and into Pen's heart. Soon other strays are being drawn to the santuary provided by Pen's makeshift pound, including one young mum who crawls under the compound fence carrying her newborn pups to safety. But as his tour of duty draws to an end, Pen cannot leave the dogs of Now Zad to their own fates. He begins hatching plans to help them escape to a better life. This is Pen's gripping account of his time in Now Zad, the friends he made there and the remarkable journey they - and he - undertook. Above all, it is the story of one man's courage and humanity and his fight to make a difference in the most hostile and dangerous environment - one dog at a time.

From the Author
I had no intention of writing a book. I was a Royal Marine who just wanted to get through my tour of duty in Afghanistan in one piece.
But then along came Nowzad. To most he was a fearsome Afghan fighting dog with no ears, but to me he was a dog that still had it in him to give humans a chance, even after all he had been through. He became my escape from the constant pressure of living and working in a remote `safe' house in the middle of Taliban occupied territory.
The one thing I hadn't planned though was Nowzad inviting along his mates! But I couldn't say no and so the journey began.
I wrote "One Dog at a Time" to share the story of the dogs of Now Zad and to try and hopefully inspire others to make a difference. For those of you that have bought this book, I would like to thank you very much. You are already helping the Nowzad Dogs' charity, formed with my wife upon my return from Afghanistan, as we are donating some of the proceeds from the sale of this book directly to the charity. I couldn't bring all the dogs of Now Zad home, but I am going to make sure I make a difference to those I left behind.

Author update and meet the dogs5
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R3S0O6R29OAJ7Z Hi - I am the author of "One dog at a Time" and I thought you might like to meet two of the dogs from the book - Nowzad & Tali and know a little about the front cover image.

Hope you enjoy! One Dog at a Time: Saving the Strays of Helmand - An Inspiring True Story

This Man Is A Hero5
I read One Dog At A Time in two sittings and was gripped not just by the drama of Pen's dog rescues but his honest, boots on the ground description of everyday warfare. Days and nights sitting in the heat and dust, waiting for the mortars to rain down again. The Afghan curried goat scene had me in stitches. In the end, of course, it's the dogs that dominate the story. You grow to love Nowzad, Tali, RPG and the rest of them and are rooting for them to make it out of the hellhole they have been born into. The ending had me in buckets of tears. I couldn't get the images out of my head all day. This country doesn't know how lucky it is to have men like this defending us. Great book. Great story. Great man. One question Sergeant Farthing: what happened next?

Hard to put down5
Hard to put down...The book comes to life from the the start,i could almost taste the dust in my throat but also feel the adrenaline and fear
during the challenges within.
This is a testament to the author, and his Troops amazing courage and of one mans determination to ensure the wellbeing of mans best friend.
The thrilling way in which Pen recounts not only his tour of duty but a peek through the curtains at his childhood and family life lets you right into the heart of a truly amazing person and book.
This is a wonderfully rich, involving and beautifully written book.
