Rachel Miller and Darcy Rhone have been best friends since childhood. They've shared birthdays, the horrors of high school and even boyfriends, but while Darcy is the sort of woman who breezes through life getting what she wants when she wants it, Rachel has always played by the rules and watched her stunning best friend steal the limelight. The one thing Rachel's always had over Darcy is the four-month age-gap which meant she was first to being a teenager, first to drive, first to everything ...but now she's about to be first to thirty. And Darcy still has a charmed life. On the eve of her thirtieth birthday, Rachel is shocked to find herself questioning the status quo. How come Darcy gets a glamorous job at a PR firm and the perfect boyfriend, while Rachel grinds away at her despised job as an attorney and remains painfully single. Is it just luck? Or, looking back at their friendship and their lives together, is it a bit more complicated than that? Then an accidental fling complicated everything, and it's time for Rachel to make a few hard choices. And she's forced to learn that sometimes true love comes at a price...

Made me question my opinions on things
What an amazing book. I bought it because someone had given me a copy of Something Blue, and before I read that I wanted to read its predecessor. I have always thought I had very black and white views about adultery and cheating partners and thought the author was going to have to go some to get me to like the main characters, especially as their relationship went on and Dex remained engaged. But I was really rooting for them to end up together. The email that Dex sent to Rachel at the start of their relationship gave me shivers.
I think if Darcy had been a more likeable character it wouldn't have been so clear cut for me, but who knows, I am a die hard romantic. I am still not comfortable with the fact that Dex didn't immediately end his relationship with Darcy when he knew he had feelings for Rachel, especially if, as the book hints, he had unrequited feelings for her since they met 7 years ago.
I really enjoyed the questions at the back of the book for reading groups. I have been pondering them since I finished to book this morning. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there remain unanswered questions and I would have liked the book to continue for a chapter or two, but it was obviously written with the sequel in mind. Even so Something Blue is about Darcy and I want to know more about Rachel and Dex.
I really recommend this book, it will really make you think.
BUY IT NOW!!
This book is great! I bought it to read during my summer vacation and could concentrate on little else until I finished it! You can really feel the excitement of NYC coupled with the reality of a childhood friendship on the brink of massive upheaval. My only hope is that the author will not make us wait too long for her next offering.
My pick of the summer
I loved this book. My impression after the first chapter was: "predictable", but I was hooked by the second chapter. The storyline proved to be more believable than predictable. I found myself identifying with the truly likeable and real heroine. Without being heavy or boring this book exposes character traits typical of many of us. There was just enough humour and tension to keep me turning the pages and I finished the book in just a couple of days.
