The struggle which follows changes Abigail's life forever. When the local police make a misjudgement which not only threatens the investigation but places a young girl's life in danger, the case is handed over to Special Agent Will Trent of the Criminal Apprehension Team - paired with detective Faith Mitchell, a woman who resents him from their first meeting. But in the relentless heat of a Georgia summer, Will and Faith realise that they must work together to find the brutal killer who has targeted one of Atlanta's wealthiest, most privileged communities - before it's too late.

This is the second book in Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series. I thought this book was really good it was full of Slaughters trademark twists and turns and the 2 leading detectives were absolutely believable and highly readable. I think the story line is really good and again, believable as we follow the effects of the tragedy on the surrounding environments. While this is the second Will Trent book it would be just as good as a standalone.
Karin Slaughter really is a breathtaking talent in the genre and definately one of the best at it, definately worth a read.
Good read, but unsure.....
I must say before I do this review that I am a huge Karin Slaughter fan and was VERY excited and waiting with baited breath for her new book. Maybe the reason I cannot decide how to rate this book is because I truly do love the characters Sara, Jeffrey and Lena who appear in other Karin Slaughter Books.
Karin Slaughter has released a series of books called 'Grant County Series' and they feature the characters of Sara Jeffrey and Len. The books are as follows:-
Blindsighted 2001
Kisscut 2002
A Faint Cold Fear 2003
Indelible 2004
Faithless 2005
Skin Privelege 2007
This book os part of the 'Atlanta' series of books of which there has only been one so far (not including this one):-
Triptych 2006
Fractured 2008
Having said that this story features Will Trent who as a standalone character is a great guy. The opening of the book introduces us to Abigail Compano who has gone home and found every mothers worst nightmare. Her daughter is laying dead and there is a man standing over her with a knife. When a struggle breaks out Abigail doesn't realise that it is about to change her life forever.
We then meet Special Agent Will Trent who gets teamed up with Detective Faith Mitchell to solve not only a murder but a kidnapping case. There are a lot of early twists and plot surprises so I won't say too much for fear of adding spoilers to the review. They have to work in the relentless heat whilst not only trying to solve the case but dealing with each other as well as protecting the wealthy neighbourhood of Ansley Park.
Neither Will or Faith are perfect and between them they have a good working relationship but as the story develops you get to learn a bit more about each of them. Will suffers with dyslexia and goes to every length he can to hide this from everybody. He also has had an extremely difficult upbringing having been raised in an oprhanage.
I love the fact that Karin Slaughter does not go overboard with her characters being perfect. I think that this just makes them and the story a lot more beleivable. This story was definately a page turner and a great read, I just think there may be something missing. I think I miss the characters from previous books such as Kisscut and A Faint Cold Fear as we have had many more books to get to know them. Maybe in the future Atlanta series I will get just as hooked as we see a bit more characted development.
All in all I think this is crime writing at it's best. Not only do we have ANOTHER great female author out there but she is up there with the best of them such as James Patterson, Mandasue Heller and Martina Cole.
An exciting and engrossing thriller that is hard to put down.
Karin Slaughter's books are always engrossing thrillers which grab you from the first few pages and keep you gripped - desperate to know what will happen next - and `Fractured' is no exception to the rule. As one would expect of her books, the writing is spot on, the tone of mystery is gripping, and the characters are well drawn.
So how does it start? Well, imagine walking into your house to find your seventeen year old daughter lying dead on the floor and her murderer standing over her. How would you react? In the opening chapter of this intriguing thriller, a mother, Abigail Campano, walks into her house to encounter that exact situation. Her reactions, although perfectly understandable, will change her life for ever. A struggle ensues, during which she ends up murdering the intruder in what appears to be an act of self defence.
But surely this is where the book should end, not where it should open?
Not at all. Before we get very much further through the book, complications set in and we find out that everything is not quite as it seemed. It doesn't really give any secrets away to warn you that the first twists in the plot come very early on. The investigators, Will Trent and his new partner Faith Mitchell find themselves dealing with a kidnapping case in addition to the murder, where they are not only chasing the real murderer, but also trying to find a kidnapped girl, before it is too late. Twists and turns occur in the plot until the denouement - which is as gripping as the rest of the novel.
For regular readers of Karin Slaughter's books, you might like to know that this is not part of the series involving Sarah Linton and Jeffrey Tulliver. Instead, she has returned to characters introduced in `Triptych' - in particular to Special Agent Will Trent. However, he is just as interesting and well written a character - and you can't help but like him as he struggles to overcome (and hide) his dyslexia.
Read it and enjoy it - but don't expect to be able to put it down too easily - and if you are the parent of a teenage girl, don't expect to find it an easy book to read.
Postscript to this review - I just passed it to my Mum to read (her first Karin Slaughter book) - she read it in two days and found it as engrossing as I did. She now wants to read more of Karin Slaughter's books.
