Synopsis
Sex, God - You know the two subjects are connected; you just don't have the words for how they are connected. And they cannot be separated. Where the one is, you will always find the other. When you talk about sexuality, you quickly end up in the spiritual - because "this" is always about "that." Something deeper, something behind it all. You can't talk about sexuality without talking about how we were made, about how we relate to each other and how we were made to relate to each other. That will inevitably lead you to who made us and at some point you have to talk about God. To make sense of the one, we have to explore the other. That is what this book is about.
Customer Reviews
An honest and thought provoking book about sexuality that gives a neat overview of Christian beliefs
Right from the introduction to Sex God, Rob Bell coins the phrase 'this is about that'.
It's his way of summing up his argument that sexuality is really about human longing to connect with something more significant then our everyday lives, something that will make sense of everything else, even for just a few minutes. Basically, sex is about God.
I'd like to apply this idea to the whole book, 'this' (the book) 'is really about that' (relationships, marrage, Christianity, churches, politics, heart break, singleness, life). Bell manages to cover an incredible amount of ground during what is a pretty short book. His writing is compassionate, enthusiastic, witty, thought provoking and inspiring.
I would recommend this book to anyone in a relationship, couples who are starting out as well as couples who have been together a long time. I'm going to buy a copy for people who are getting married and I would recommend it as a wedding gift.
I would also recommend it to anyone interested in Christian beliefs as the overview offered here is as insightful as anything I have read anywhere else, and the whole 'sex' thing makes sure it stays interesting ;-)
My only criticism is that Bell does not approach the subject of homosexuality. This has become such a large issue in the Christian church that I was personally very disappointed to see a new book on sexuality by such a prominant Christian pastor not even mention it.
Overall, this is an improvement over his last book 'Velvet Elvis' and it deserves to become one of those 'must read' books that people pass around.
Sex and Spirituality
I was profoundly disappointed by this book. For years I have been looking for a writer who would examine the deep links between sex and prayer mysticism and spirituaty. There are deep psychological issues to be examined. Some expressions of faith especially in the charismatic world have deep sexual undertones. This book is a naive expression from a neo-fundamentalist posting which will meet the needs of very few. As a fairly intellectual ans firmly liberal Christian, I found nothing to reflect on in this book which it took a very short time to read. I do not rate this book at all.
Best book on sexuality I've ever read
Fantastic book, After reading it, I immediately went and bought my son a copy. It's simple to read yet also thoughtful and deep. Definately reccomend it.
