A must for student nurses!
Fundamentals of Nursing:
This is not just a book but a complete package, this particular edition of the book, not only includes an indepth explanation of many topics but also has a cd-rom and access to online resources. The cd-rom includes learning activities taking this book to the next step allowing the reader to complete a number of activities to aid in their learning. The resources which can be found on the evolve website, are brilliant. These again include interactive actvities and also contains a round up of the chapters which you can listen to - this being an asset to anybody that perfers listening to information rather then trying to find it in a book.
The book it self contains a number of sections including; holistic care, caring throughout the lifespan, nursing in practice, nursing patients with special needs and critically thinking related to nursing care. Each of the sections are then broken down into sub sections and look at areas such as; care planning, ethics, and key nursing topics for example wound care, nutrition and pain management. The book not only covers the theory behind the topics but also includes information on practical skills. An example of this could be seen in the information detailing how to prepare an injection and then a step by step guide of how to administer this and the rationale of why it is done in that particular way.
This book I would certainly recommend to student nurses. If your a first year nurse and want a good solid book that covers everything from basic care to rationales of practical skills, the importance of holistic care and the ethical issues surrounding nursing this is for you!It is also presented in a friendly way, with a good use of diagrams, and all the sections are broken down making it easy to find the information you were looking for quickly. I'm currently a third year student nurse and feel that this would have been a great book to have since the start of the course as it has information on all the units that I have covered so far.
