Product Description

Gabriel McQueen has only just arrived home on holiday leave from the service when his county-sheriff father sends him back out again with new marching orders. A brewing ice storm, and a distant neighbour who's fallen out of contact, have the local lawman concerned. So he enlists Gabriel to make the long haul to the middle of nowhere, and make sure Lolly Helton is safe and sound. It's a trip the younger McQueen would rather not make given the bitter winter weather - and the icy conditions that have always existed between him and Lolly. But there's no talking back when your dad is the town's top cop. And there's no turning back when night falls just as Gabriel arrives - and discovers that the weather outside isn't the only thing that's frightful. Spotting strangers in Lolly's home - one of them carrying a weapon - is all it takes to kick Gabriel into combat mode. And his stealth training is all he needs to extract Lolly from the house without alerting her captors. But when the escape is discovered, the heat - and the hunt - are on.

Customer Reviews

A bit of a con2
Do not buy this book at full price as it is very, very short (195 pages) with rather large print to pad it out even more. I enjoyed the story, but there is really not much of it. I would give the story a 4 star, but I have to give far less for the shortness of the book versus the steepness of the price.

Sweet but short4
I love Linda Howard's books and this was no exception. My only complaint was it was too short and took me less than a day to read and that was on my 45 minute train journeys to and from work and an hour at lunch.

I liked that Lolly and Gabe had to change their preconceptions about each other. They had been at school together but he thought her stuck up and snobby whilst she was shy and had a crush on him, so was rude to hide her feelings. Also it was good have a female protagonist who was neither useless nor too over burdened with skills. Lolly used her common sense to get out of trouble but leant on Gabe when he rescued her. However she did not sit back when he need help and came to his rescue on a couple of occasions. The scenes in the ice forest were good and the sense of terror whether from the Meths addicts who invaded Lolly's home or from falling trees was well written.

I particularly liked that at the end their relationship is just starting, in so many books the couple are getting married after knowing each other for a week. As the time period in this book was only hours that would have been unrealistic and fortunately was acknowledged.

I have always bought Linda Howard books as soon as they are issued, but am very disappointed with this one. It is very short, and there is not much substance to the story.I hope her next one is longer & better!
