Emery's Elements of Medical Genetics is a classic introduction to the subject that has remained popular over the past thirty five years through regular revision. Its success is also due to a three-part structure that takes the student through the basic principles of genetics, goes on to show how they can be applied to general medicine, and then describes genetics disorders and the practice of clinical genetics. Its succinct and direct text make it the perfect reference for a medical undergraduate or basic introduction to the subject for a science student. This twelfth edition has been rigorously updated, in particular in the areas of: molecular genetics, DNA technology and ethics. Clinical examples have been added throughout the text, a new self-testing section has been added and the clinical photographs updated and improved.

Customer Reviews
A good book for medics
Contrary to the previous reviewer's experience, i thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and used it almost exclusively to study and revise for my second-year genetics and development module at the Royal Free & UCL med school.
The text is comprehensive and the book organised in a coherent manner. The writing is lucid and succinct, and is above all accessible to an undergraduate medical student audience.
If your medical school curriculum requires that you understand the fundamental scientific principles underlying modern genetics and be able to apply them within clinical contexts, then this book will satisfy your needs. The chapters i found most helpful were those on risk calculation, genetic screening and counselling, diagnostics and testing, and the discussion on ethical issues in medical genetics.
This book will be most helpful to those who require an overview of genetic theory and genetics in medical practice; the text covers these topics in sufficient depth that would be expected of medics.
Horrible, horrible, horrible
Do not buy this book. It is a waste of your money. It is too detailed for medical students. You do not need this level of information. The first few chapters are useful. Also the editing is atrocious. One of the most difficult books Ive read in terms of grammar. In hindsight, it would be better to simply borrow it from a library, read a few introductory chapters and then return it, rather than buy it.
This book is badly written and hard to understand!
I would strongly advise to think twice before buying this book. I am a medical student and thought it would be useful for a genetics module, I was wrong! It is a very difficult book to read and even more difficult to understand. I found it far too complex and deltailed in areas that were irrelevant to medical studies, and yet it explained the basics very poorly. That are a number of other books that are much better!
