Just about the write level of detail
A relatively easy-to-read book, it covers all the types of infection you can expect to meet at University, although some do lack a little detail.

The book is split into chapters with each one covering a particular class of pathogen, generally organised by genus (Salmonella, Mycobacterium, Campylobacter, Adenovirus, Helminths etc.) which makes it easier to find extra notes, especially since most courses cover types of infection rather than individual microbes.

My main complaint is that there is a lack of consistency in organisation and content from chapter to chapter (since each chapter is written by a different expert). This can sometimes make it difficult to revise from since you can't necessarily get the answers to the same questions for each bug. However, you can be assured that if the fact you're after isn't in here or in your lecture notes, then it probably isn't worth knowing (or they haven't found it out yet).

A decent textbook for any pathology/pathogenesis based microbiology course.

Excellent reference for infectious microbes
I recently bought the 17th edition of Medical Microbiology and am very impressed with this book.

It begins with some basics on microbiology (both bacteriology and virology) followed by a concise section on host responses to microbes, and then more detail on different classes of bacteria, viruses, fungal and parasitic infections. This layout, along with a good balance of figures, makes it a very user friendly book.

It serves as an excellent reference point for checking up on different microbes with key-points summarised at the end of each section. However, if you are looking for really in-depth information on a particular infection this probably isn't the book for you.

Great book for pre-Part 1 FRCPath
Bought this book with the idea of using as my primary study aid for Part 1 FRCPath. Not disappointed. This new edition has a few more colour pics, which always helps i feel. Great breakdown of pathogens by type into easily readable chapters. For those that like a more clinical based approach then i might suggest Mim's Medical Microbiology. Using both together is ideal.
