Hip guide to iPhone
Hey! This is cute. This is cool. This is not your usual dry old user guide. This is a guide written by guys wearing jeans, sneakers and black sweatshirts.
The acknowledgements are effusive. When you read, "I want to thank my entire family. I truly have the greatest family...." you know that these are American authors. But simply because the language is enthusiastic, doesn't make a bad book and this is anything but bad.
One in a series devoted to Apple's portable products all with the subtitle `Portable Genius', this is a guide to the latest version of the celebrated iPhone. It is written in a fun style epitomised by almost the first sentence: "Just tap the icon...and the application loads lickety-split".
The chapters are straightforward each dealing with a key aspect of the device: configuring, phoning, surfing, emailing, synchronising (using the neologism `syncing'), managing applications - such as the in-built iPod, video-player or camera - and helping organise one's life!
Does it do the job? While the youthful tone may sometimes irritate, it covers all the essentials plus many intriguing features that you don't get with the small leaflet that comes with the iPhone in its box. There are so many useful things hidden away on the iPhone that the average user needs a guide such as this to help him or her get the maximum benefit. As well as clear step-by-step instructions, there are colour illustrations galore. There is a useful glossary and a good index.
If you want to do more than simply make and receive phone calls on your iPhone, this book will be of great help to you.
iPhone 3g Portable Genius
Look no further - this guide to the 3g iPhone is spot-on and ought to have been the one in the box. A little cutsie-pie in its approach but very readable all the same. I haven't found anything that it didn't cover for me. It's just a pity I can't have an electronic version on my iPhone!
Not accurate
I've only had my iPhone for one day so I've only tried to do one thing using this book.
Sadly this one thing, making a ringtone using my iTunes library, cannot be done using this book.
The advice, to move a track into GarageBand, simply doesn't work because of copyright protection.
The book should have been proofread/researched better!
