Customer Reviews
A brilliant account of unprecidented determination.
I have read this book seven times and still cannot take in the enormous effort and shear bloody-mindedness of the people that built the first atomic bomb.Stephane groueff brilliantly portrays the egotistical General Groves, the man given the job of making the whole thing succeed, he would stop at nothing and let no man get in his way in trying to acheive the impossible. The book gives a step by step account of the way Groves collected the best scientists and industrialists in the whole of America. It goes into great detail, probaby limited at the time, into how they devised ways of refining Uranium for use in the first bomb, and the massive cost of building the neccesary processes needed to do this, and how scientists had to convert laboratory experiments which produced millionths of a gramme of product into a process that would produce tons! The president of America gave the project its highest category of proirity and an unlimited budget, in the end 2 Billion dollars was the final bill. If you are of a technical mind and understand basic nuclear physics you will thoroughly enjoy this book, that is why I have give it 5 stars.
Astonishing
