Product Description

Find the in-depth technical information you need to support TCP/IP on the Windows 2000 platform with the Microsoft Windows 2000 TCP/IP Protocols And Services Technical Reference. It steps you through TCP/IP protocols layer by layer in the OSI model, while offering details to help you handle daily connectivity tasks. Weaving concepts with practical examples, it presents a detailed picture of TCP/IP protocols and services for Windows 2000 networks and discusses how to use these protocols and services to maximize LAN/WAN performance. It includes utilities to help you monitor your network and provides expert instruction so you understand: The Network Access Layer: How the network architectures that Windows 2000 supports carry data in a TCP/IP network; Internet Layer Protocols: How IP provides a reliable end-to-end delivery system for individual datagrams, both for one-to-one and for one-to-many communication; Transport Layer Protocols: How TCP and UDP use IP to let applications running on Windows 2000 - based PCs communicate with other applications and PCs, plus how TCP manages the reliable flow of data between sender and receiver; Application Layer Protocols and Services: How Windows 2000 implements key RFC-compliant application protocols.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
As Microsoft Windows becomes increasingly network-centric, its TCP/IP services become increasingly important. Microsoft Windows 2000 TCP/IP Protocols and Services Technical Reference exists to document the protocols as they relate to Windows 2000. The odds are high that you will be able to find the networking solutions you need with the help of this book. Even though it's not designed as a test-prep assistant, the book provides a grounding in the TCP/IP protocols that's strong enough to help you pass the TCP/IP exam (70-059) en route to a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) certification.

The authors use the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) reference model as their organisational guide. With each protocol in the TCP/IP stack, they document the relevant open standards with packet diagrams and clear explanatory prose. Lots of Network Monitor traces appear (with comments), too. Then, they tie the open standards to Microsoft-specific phenomena, including the company's implementation of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Domain Name Service (DNS), Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), and Internet Information Services 5.0 (IIS 5). Throughout, the authors place emphasis on what is communicated over the network in various situations, rather than on configuring Windows 2000 itself. The companion CD-ROM is underused, but it does contain some worthwhile network data captures that illustrate key transactions. They are designed for viewing in the Network Monitor application that ships with Windows 2000 Server or Systems Management Server 2.0. --David Wall, amazon.com

Topics covered: The Internet protocol stack as Microsoft Windows 2000 implements it, with emphasis on address resolution, routing, Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), Internet Group Message Protocol (IGMP), IPv6, and TCP connections and data exchange (including errors and re-transmissions). More Windows-specific material deals with Microsoft's implementation of DHCP, DNS, WINS, and tunnelling protocols for virtual private networks (VPNs).

Probably good for the MCSE, a reference dictionary3
The secondary title of this book was a comprehensive guide to _using_ networking protocols with Windows 2000. With the network monitor examples supplied, I had consequently expected it to be more of a practical guide than a reference dictionary - which is what it turned out to be. BTW you do need the SMS 2 version of Network Monitor to look at the examples supplied on the CD, though I think the version supplied with W2000 will give a more restricted view. Unfortunately, SMS 2 network monitor & its full use was nowhere fully described, though this has now become IMO a fully developed tool with its use of remote agents (for instance) - as essential to Networking as Performance Monitor is to performance monitoring. The obvious comparison is with W Stevens TCP/IP illustrated V1; although this latter book is to some extent outdated and looks at things primarily) from the Unix standpoint, it is clearly the work of an enthusiast - with many practical illustrations. Part of the reason for the dryness of the text in W2K protocols & services is its attempt to appeal to MCSE candidates. Having studied (& passed) MCSE (NT4) there is a definite tendency to cram information in over a broad area with not much depth, in such books!

With (presumably) the entire resources of MS at their disposal, it seems a pity that there was not more useful information on the CD. The CD includes RFC (of course), 80megs of Draft RFC! (useful?), a few microsoft documents, and the network monitor traces (duplicated as text files in another directory) *and* (mainly) included in the text of the book as well!

The TCP/IP protocol was well described, though UPD & TCP ports used by a 'Microsoft 2000 components' highly underestimated the actual ports actually used, which is unfortunate in these security minded times.

Although it _is_ 'W2000' it is a pity that little reference is made to NT4, particularly as in practice most practitioners will be working in a mixed environment at least for the next few years. In particular with relation to the numerous registry keys given.

There were a few minor errors & at least one duplication.

An outstanding addition to my library5
This is an excellent book. Clearly written and foucused on TCP/IP as implemented in Windows 2000. It's a lot clearer than reading the RFCs, and the registry tips are very helpful too.

The network traces included on the CD are also a great way of helping me understand how TCP/IP works on the wire.

Well Done!

Very informative book5
Think it's amazing book. One of the best TCP/IP book that i had or saw.
I had TCP/IP Network Administration of O'Reilly (2nd edition). That book didn't really impressed me. It don't covers the aspects that you'll want to know.

This book covers more aspects, it have very good structure, clear explanations of all covered subjects. Think it's very handy book for everybody, even if you're not sysadmin.
