The best of the three
If you can't decide between the three of these 'Gonzo Papers' volumes, then buy this one. It is the best without a doubt, stretching across five decades of Hunter's naughty behaviour. I loved it, hated it and it made me laugh.
More notes on the death of the American Dream?
This compendium begins with an abortive short story that Thompson obviously couldn't be bothered to finish, or ran out of inspiration. That pretty much sets the tone for the whole book. Thompson seems to print anything he has lying about and gets away with it. Alot of this is regurgitated material - from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Curse of Lono - serously, there's alot of excerpts reprinted verbatim.
I remember being quite frustrated when I bought this. It would be best described as a Hunter S. Thompson Reader. But not half as good as The Great Shark Hunt (the 'high-water mark' of Thompson's journalism).
Isn't the cover photo great though?
not for the fainthearted
Once again HST over achieves and surprises, his sense of shock that the "American Dream" proves more elusive than ever, deserves close attention. Please challenge this point of view.
