Synopsis
When Steve Jobs became the acting CEO of Apple Computers, it was hemorrhaging more than a billion dollars a year. His return after twelve years of exile to the company he cofounded completely revitalized Apple. With the revolutionary success of the iMac, it turned a profit of more than six hundred million dollars - one of the biggest turnarounds in business history. Based on interviews with scores of people - rivals, colleagues, friends - who have worked with Jobs over the years, The Second Coming of Steve Jobs presents the most revealing portrait yet of this extraordinarily complex man - How and why he almost gave up on his career; the details of his negotiations with Disney's Jeffrey Katzenberg and Michael Eisner, and the culture clash between Silicon Valley and Hollywood; his methods of leadership, management, creativity and innovation; his friendship and rivalry with Bill Gates - and much more. Now, as Jobs prepares to conquer Hollywood with his enormously successful animation film studio, Pixar, Alan Deutschman brings readers one of the most talked-about business biographies of modern times.
Customer Reviews
I was interested in learning more about Steve Jobs...
I am a keen Macintosh user, and believe that the computer I have on my desk is the best there is. My interest in the personalities behind Apple came from watching the Movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley", which led me to read the book "Fire in the Valley", on which the movie was based. I then read "Apple Confidential", an account of the history of Apple Computer, Inc. The Second Coming of Steve Jobs does as much as any book could do to help one understand a very complex and contradictory man. He is an innovator and a genius, but he is also infantile and selfish. I don't know if I would like to work with him, but I love the products he turns out.
Overall, this is a fascinating account on the life of Mr Jobs between leaving Apple in 1985 and his victorious, and controvertial return, in 1996. You learn much about his relationships with employees, his NeXT and Pixar intrests and their sucesses and infamous failures. Bill Gates even gets a look in, leaving unsulting messages on Steve's answering machine, slagging-off his Macintosh.
Read it!
Totally compelling, couldn't put it down.
Can't remember reading a book as fast as this before! A well told story about a man who does seem to be a bit of a genius/lunatic combination. Nice to read the story about Pixar as well. Buy it now and enjoy!
There are better profiles out there
This book is filled with cutesy asides, clichés and tabloid-esque hyperbole, most of which seem to have been sourced third hand at best. I expected good things from this book but sadly it’s a very low-brow account of Steve Jobs and for your money, there are many better options out there if you want a serious account on the man.
