More Darkness For the Man Without Fear
Presented in this hardcover volume is a year's worth of Daredevil writings by writer Brian Michael Bendis. He's taken the character in a slightly different direction that has aggitated some fans as the lead character has been seen to have gotten 'too dark, and 'too flawed'. In these issues, there can be seen a very, dark, mob oriented storyline following a coup to sieze control of New York's underworld and the repercussions of this action. Alongside this plot is another one dealing with how Matt Murdock (Daredevil's alter-ego) deals with being outed to the media.
The artwork by Alex Maleev is very dark, and angular. Reflecting the style of Bendis' writing. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and is radically different to any previous art in Daredevil.
In addition; Episodically, Bendis' writing can seem disjointed and occasionally infuriating as the pace is very slow and progressive, but collected in this volume it is given a much greater flow and reads very nicely. In addition, the production of the book is of a very high standard and the art seems all the more impressive on the over-sized pages.
My only real complaint about it is that not all the story lines are resolved and you will no doubt have to buy another volume to get a proper sense of closure. But all in all, an excellent read that'll look great on your bookshelf.
Dark and Lovely
In my opinion this has to be one of the greatest runs of any comic book and I have read quite a few. Incredibly dark and moody artwork by Alex Maleev with a fantastic story by Bendis to match. Daredevil looks like a crazed devil in most of the pages "do not mess with the Devil"! like scenes from a horror film. Bendis has written a perfectly paced story that you do not want to end I wish the book was 500 pages long, well I'll just have to go get volume 3.
