Customer Reviews

A totally captivating read throughout5
It has been many years since I have read the Dark Elf Trilogy, but having recently repurchased it, and re-read them I had to write a review.
It was actually this Trilogy that first ignited my passion with fantasy fiction, and even reading them again I find that the books still totally captivated me.
If you are reading this review then I would have to assume that either you are new to fantasy fiction, or for some reason have not managed to read an RA Salvatore book.
So to enlighten you this trilogy deals with the beginning of the tale of Drizzt Do'Urden, who is perhaps the best loved fantasy fiction character there is in print, at least in my humble opinion.

It is quite simply the tale of the dark Elf, born with a pure heart and soul, but unfortunately in the sinister, and evil Drow city of Menzoberranzan.
Without giving away too much of the plot, the books basically tell of the trials that Drizzt faces to maintain his integrity, and honour, in the face of the evil heritage that define the dark Elf society.
Salvatore tells the tale in a masterful way, with character descriptions, intriguing and devious twists of plot, and written combat that will make you feel as if you are in the way of the swords yourself.

I think personally my favourite books were actually the IceWind Dale trilogy that follow-on from this particular trilogy. My only reason for this is that I found the characters that enter in the second trilogy really interact well with each other. However the dark Elf Trilogy is a brilliant read, and I think an essential introduction to the infamous Drizzt Do'Urden, and also an excellent view of the dark Elf society he came from.

In short if you are a fan of fantasy fiction this is an essential purchase to add to your book collection.

Essential Fantasy Read5
The first thing that came to mind when the book was thrust upon me was 'its a Dungeons and Dragons book.' The first thought is a heavily cliched fantasy good vs evil-good defeats evil-they all live happily ever after. I was wrong in such a dramaltically huge way.

Salvatore manages to captivate the reader from the start, describing the Dark Elf race, their cruel city and an inticing assult upon any who would cross blades with the Drow family - and thats only at the start.
The trilogy is a series of journeys, one that sees the main character - Drizzt Do'Urden - Grow up, survive and eventually escape from his sinister heritage. The trilogy twists and turns describing ups and downs, battles, friendships gained and lost, meetings and farewells and exploration of a new world. All of this as Drizzt tries to find his place in the world.

I cant remember reading anything as enthralling. Lord of the Rings was a chore to read compared to this.

get it, read it and cherish this masterpiece!

Dark Elf Trilogy5
If there is one trilogy that won't dissapoint, this is it. Very little I can make a bad comment on, it has you hooked. It is everything an exciting read should be. The three books beautifully follow the life of this young dark elf as he escapes the wickedness of his race. Developed as the famous scimitar wielding warrior, you will find a more compassionate side of the character. The all-powerful combat machine has a heart of honesty and sincerity which ultimately drives him from the callous machine that is his home. Read the adventures that take him from the evil of the deep, to the lawful realm of the surface. You will not be dissapointed. The book set is trully a masterpiece and will keep you wanting more. Then follow the story further with the Icewind Dale Trilogy. I have to award 5 stars, if I don't I will feel guilty justice hasn't prevailed.
