A road less travelled
Covering the various settlements in (what was to become) the United States before the arrival of the Pilgrim Fathers, this combined travelogue & history is both informative and funny.
Following the same (& successful) formula of investigating the geography & history of an area; as he used in Into the Blue (following Captain Cook's voyages of discovery), the author sets out to investigate the various successful & not so successful settlements of his own country before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock. The Vikings, Spanish, French & English trials, tribulations & atrocities are numerous & fascinating, yet forgotten by the Americans themselves, let alone other nations - why?
Less laugh out loud than Bill Bryson but similar in that it is an effortless read where you'll learn a load of stuff along the way.
good reading
i love tony's style of writing. he links the history with a personal tour of the areas and then combines little ditties about the people he's met along the way. yet another excellent book from himA Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World
