Product Description

STUDIO LIGHTING SOLUTIONS, the first volume of the new PDN Pros series, is a comprehensive guide to the world of still-life photography in a controlled studio environment. This genre includes food, beverages, desserts, gems & jewellery, cosmetics, household products, small kitchens, small appliances, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, small sets, home entertainment, electronics, home furnishings, in-studio automotive photography. Highlighting the real-world projects of over 25 successful professional photographers, this book shows photographers what it takes to achieve both artistic and commercial success in still-life photography. Over 60 shots are presented in an easy-to-read/view style, with descriptive text accompanying each featured photograph. For each shot, the photographer provides in-depth information about the assignment and the shoot. This includes the objectives of the client and/or art director, the specific logistic circumstances and challenges, the lighting and other techniques employed to get the shot, the digital manipulation and styling necessary, equipment needs, postproduction, and more, all leading up to the final, successful, real-world photograph.

Customer Reviews

Disappointing2
I was rather disappointed with this book. I was hoping for a nice glossy book with fantastic pictures and a detailed run through of how those pictures were created and inspired. Instead the pictures were, in my opinion, mediocre and most of the text was about the photographer describing how they were chosen to do that particular shoot, with only a fairly brief commentary on how the shoot was achieved. This was also mostly very technical description (what make of light, reflector etc.) of the equipment used with relatively few practical hints or tips.

The copy I received looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for a good many years (and was returned for this reason).

It might be useful for professional photographers, or those who are into the industry jargon and technical aspect, but not much help if you want to learn how to take better photos.

Just an excellent book- buy it5
Being an avid pdn magazine reader I knew of Jack Neubart and his articles with the magazine, always a good read. This book and his later work dealing with Location photography by the same publisher are just a pleasure to read and the images contained in them are excellent, the description by each photographer of the thought processes behind the final images are very insightful. Just buy the book you'll not regret it.

A little daunting - but, highly justifiable... 5
Ideal book for any person looking into creating simple to complex studio sets, this book is packed full of techniques used by professional photographers on a commercial stance. The more complex settings can offer interesting technical information, which could be used for simpler projects; maybe a little daunting, but deserving of any professional/amateur photographer's book shelf (not for the novice).
