This chapter contains some important information about the QTS Numeracy Skills Test with which candidates should be familiar prior to taking the test.
Section 1. A Brief Guide to the Test.
The Numeracy Skills test has been designed to ensure that all Newly Qualified Teachers have a basic level of proficiency in numeracy and are able to utilise these skills in their professional role as a teacher.
The test is taken by all trainees seeking Qualified Teacher Status, regardless of their disciplne, and it is a requirement of acheiving that status that they pass the test.
Trainee teachers are allowed unlimited attempts at the test.
The test is delivered and marked by computer. Results, recorded as pass or fail will be printed out on completion of the test.
the Teacher Training Agency will provide candidates, who do not pass the test, with feedback outlining their performance on the test.
The test is in two sections
Section 1 consists of 12 mental Arithmetic Questions delivered through the computer via headphones.
Section 2 consists of 16 On-Screen questions delivered through the computer. Responses to the questions will require the use of the mouse or keyboard.
The normal time for the test is 48 minutes. An on-screen clock allows candidates to keep track of the time during the test.
Candidates with special requirements may be allowed additional time.
The tests are calibrated to be the same standard as the benchmark test (available on the Teacher Training Agency website) which has a pass mark of 60%.
Detailed information on the Mental Arithmetic and On Screen sections of the test and examples of the type of test items used in the test can be found in the rest of this chapter.
