Synopsis
This beautiful and large format book is the definitive monograph of artist/illustrator Charley Harper's work, spanning his five decade career. Charley likes to say, that when he paints a bird, he doesn't count all the feathers in the wings - he just counts the wings. He reduces his subject to the simplest possible visual terms without losing its identity. Minimal realism, he calls it, and it has had a tremendous influence on designers and artists familiar with his work. Bringing his legacy to a wider audience, Ammo Books celebrates this singular talent as well as his sparse, yet colorful and graphic style, in this impressive title that comes complete with one of four different artist's prints, signed and numbered by both Charley Harper and Todd Oldham.
Customer Reviews
An incredible visual experience
This book is superb. It was quite expensive, but the price is more than justified. It was delivered in a box the size of a small child, and it is now the largest book I own (about 15"x18", and very thick). The book itself comes in a special printed card box cover to protect it (a drawback of its large size is it will not fit on a bookshelf). There are so many images in this book, it is a very comprehensive collection of work. It is the only way to get a good understanding of the different collections of work. The quality is superb, and the sheer size of the images allows you to appreciate them fully. I have not yet had time to read the text within the book (having only recieved it this morning), but being a fan of both Harper and Oldham, I know it's going to be good.
The only thing you should be a little weary of is that Amazons description of the item is actually for the Limited Edition copies that come complete with a print. This is the standard edition, and does not come with a seperate print, however it does still come in a decorative box. You can see the difference if you look on the Ammo Books website.
I also recommend you buy Birds with Words, an equally excellent book to own.
Ecstatic and disapointed at the same time!
The book is beautifull and would be a delight to anyone interested in design or nature....but the was no promised (via the synopsis) 'signed' print .
Amazon did send me a second book out to me be still no print. As I collect prints this was a huge disapointment and I only hope the publishers read this and can find it in their hearts to send me one.
