Just your average Son of Poseidon5
I bought this box-set because they came highly recommended and because I read Ancient History at university. I know, I know: they're supposed to be childrens' books but that never stopped me from reading Diana Wynne Jones or JK Rowling. Rick Riordan deserves to be up there in the Top 3.

Percy (short for Perseus: his mom named him after the one Greek hero who actually managed to get a happy ending)is a star. He grabs your attention with the chapter headings alone and his 'voice' (the books are written in the first person) is so off-beat and engaging you're rooting for him from the very beginning.

The supporting cast of characters includes satyrs, centaurs, telepathic pegasi ("You're the man, boss! You ever want us to stampede anyone for ya, just whistle!") and a whole host of others, up to and including the gods themselves. The different characters & motivations of the gods are made very clear in their attitudes to Percy and you realise as quickly as he does that trusting them, by and large, would be an extremely dangerous thing to do.

The books are tightly plotted and belt along at a rip-roaring pace: Percy spends most of his time lurching from one crisis to another; hardly ever getting a moment to catch his breath. His relationship with his absentee father is, as you might expect, a complicated one and only becomes more so as the series progresses and Tyson enters the picture.

As he grows up through the books, his relationships with his friends become more complex too. You can feel the series arc stretching ahead: Mr Riordan knows exactly where he's going with these books and boy, is he going to take you along for the ride. I bought the fourth title as soon as I'd finished the third book and once book 5 comes out in paperback, it's mine! Until then, I'll keep my fingers crossed for him.

Go, Percy: whatever it is, you can do it! I know you can.
There is nothing average about him, or these books. If you're thinking that they're a cheap Harry Potter rip-off, you could not be more wrong. The 'Olympians' series stands on its own merits, and trust me: there are many. Buy this now: buy them all. You won't regret it.

Percy jackson. set of 3 books3
Of the ones i read very good. comment really to do with quality of books. i recommend you get these books separately and not as this set. quality of the paper used feels low, and cheap binding used. In my opinion the books feel like cheap reprints. if you just want to read and forget about the books then ok otherwise not something to be proud of. Price was too good to be true. There just had to be a catch.Percy Jackson: Lighting Thief / Sea of Monsters / Titan's Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians)
