Bill Maher is on the forefront of the new wave of comedians who influence and shape political debate through their comedy. He is best known not just for being funny, but for advocating truth over sensitivity and taking on the political establishment. Maher first came to national attention as the host of the hit ABC-TV programme Politically Incorrect, where he offered a combustible mixture of irreverence and acerbic humour that helped him to garner a loyal following, as well as a reputation for being a controversial bad boy. His best selling book, "New Rules", brings these brilliantly conceived riffs and rants to the written page. This new edition of the book, in paperback for the first time, also features some brand-new material not found in the hard cover.

Customer Reviews
excellent
Any fan of Real Time with Bill Maher will tell you they wait with baited breath for the 'new rules' segment which closes each show. Witty, catty and topical... New Rules takes no prisoners; political or pop culture, Maher delivers each 'rule' with the acerbic wit we've come to know and love.
Old Rules
Television humorist pokes fun at modern culture, politics, and fads. These are from his HBO TV series where he does a segment called "New Rules". Targets include advertising, cell phones, Starbucks, homeland security, and the movies. There is strong language in this book. It is funny, but is much better when he tells them live. He is not always right, he is cruel, but he is thoughtful in his rants. But if you cannot see him perform live, and can get past the lewd language, the rants are topical and humorist.
An entertaining, thought-provoking book, but don't take it too seriously!
Bill Maher has his own political ideas and some are pretty far out, but he's more right than wrong. He's great at humor and satire, but I prefer to see him on the stage or TV, speaking his mind, rather than in written format. He's much more effective in person, and he can really be funny ... when he's not busy getting your goat.
I like him, though, and I reallllllllllly like his Amazon Interviews of best-selling authors. That's a wonderful format: short, timely, and interesting. I hope to be interviewed by him one day.
All that said, I still recommend this book. An entertaining, at times enlightening, book.
