Fables? Fabulous...5
The Fables storyline continues in this, the eleventh installment of the trade-paperbacks. The series has, to this point, been based around the notion that the Fables (Snow White, Prince Charming, the Big Bad "Bigby" Wolf) exist in exile from their native, Fable, worlds in response to the Adversary's domination of those worlds.

The title, War and Pieces, defines clearly the scope of this instalment and is brilliantly realised. From the secret agent espionage of one character (I don't like spoilered reviews!) rescuing another, the war plans and battles to the pathos of heroism this storyline excels. It ties together a few threads, including the thread behind the story's realisation, and opens some more for the future.

The characterisation is wonderfully true to each character's back-story, the art, as ever, is wonderfully evocative and draws you into the story.

It's hard to recommend this as a stand-alone read, mainly because, if you get and read this (presuming you have an affinity for the fantasy/magic-realism genre), you will subsequently want to read the others, too. Though that is heartily recommended.

Some reviews suggest that the main players aren't sufficiently involved in the story, which makes sense, since the generals wouldn't be in the trenches (possibly why wars are so badly effected), but is also without, or with reduced, merit since there are two main characters involved in the battles with a third entering the climactic battle towards the end.

In closing, all I can really say is that I wanted to read it again the minute I put it down the first time. And the second, and the third. It is truly wonderful story-telling, caught between true literature and a more cinematic style, marrying the two aspects in a near-perfect union of the strengths of both.

Fables - War and Pieces Vol.115
Yet another great installment from the writers of the Fable series. The final battle in a war that has gone on for centeries. A most enjoyable read with a few suprises. But to understand this volume, you need to start from Vol 1. I only hope there is more to come.
