Manufacturer's Description
Resolve and design; The 4.0 Megapixel sensor on the Digital IXUS 40 is ideal for prints up to A3 size. One secret behind the super sleek and slim body is a new UA (ultra-high refractive index aspherical) 3x optical zoom lens, which delivers outstanding, uncompromising image fidelity in an incredibly compact size.

Big screen movies; The large, high-definition 2.0" LCD screen allows immediate review of images and playback of very long high quality 30 fps VGA movie clips with sound (recording of up to 1GB movie files possible). You can even shoot up to 60 sec of fast QVGA action at 60 fps for slow motion review.

Enviable technology;Canon's DIGIC II processor links all key camera functions and includes a dedicated movie processor, driving fast auto-focus, outstanding camera performance and quick start-up times. Highly complex image processing algorithms necessary to deliver superb image quality are handled fast and efficiently to keep you ready for the next shot and to allow for rapid, smooth continuous shooting.

Make a scene;iSAPS instantly analyses the scene and makes adjustments even before the shutter release is pressed. It optimises exposure, white balance and auto-focus settings in every shooting situation for consistently brilliant results. Six scene modes help you create great results with confidence in tricky shooting conditions, while a fully automatic 9-point AiAF system gets even off centre subjects sharply in focus.

Instant print;Connect the camera to any PictBridge compatible photo printer, push the Print/Share button and within seconds, you'll be holding a full colour print - it's that simple. When connected to a Canon SELPHY CP series printer, you can even print handy ID photo prints.

Sharing shots;Canon's comprehensive ZoomBrowser EX (for Windows) and ImageBrowser (for Macintosh) software is provided for editing and retouching shots and movies, managing and laying out albums as well as creating slide shows. Then compile your own online gallery with 100MB of free space on the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY** for sharing with friends and family.

Optional extras; An All Weather Case will keep you shooting while snorkelling, skiing, surfing and having general outdoor fun. Back inside, keep your Digital IXUS good as new with an optional, snug fitting Canon Soft Case.

    Small is beautiful4
I'd agree with holmsey2's review: the Ixus 40 does seem to have slightly more purple fringing than my old Ixus model in certain high-contrast situations, but this is to be expected when the lens and CCD chip are so small. Photos are better quality than comparably sized Sony models for instance. Detail and focussing is improved over the old models, and responsiveness is hugely improved thanks to the new Digic II processor. This latter point alone, along with the great 2" screen, sold this camera to me over the Ixus 430 - expect to see Digic II in more new Canon models after Christmas. SD memory cards are relatively cheap now which is another plus point.

The plastic toggle on the hand strap is designed to help you open the small AV port cover and also eject the SD card if you don't have long nails! I bought a £15 Canon leather case to keep the camera protected against such sources of scratches.

One last comment: I'm on my second Ixus 40 after the first turned out to have a stuck pixel on the screen. Amazon replaced it quickly with no hassle.

Fantastic quality and small enough to take everywhere!5
I spent a lot of time looking around for a replacement Digital Camera, my first foray into the field was a Canon Powershot A70 which has a lot more features than the Ixus 40 (most of which I never used) but is too big and bulky to carry around easily - it takes 4 AA batteries for a start!

The Ixus 40 is small and light enough to be in my pocket all the time - it balances out nicely with my phone!!

The pictures are superb quality - bright and clear, and the movies are excellent too - boy am I glad I got a 1Gb SD Card to go with it!!

All in all, I can strongly recomment this camera to anyone who is looking for high quality shots from something you can keep on you all the time.

    I'm very pleased...5
Bought this a couple of weeks ago and not regretted it one bit. The unit itself is very small and puts my friends digital cameras to shame. When you turn it on it comes to life and is ready to shoot in less than a second, it's very quick indeed. To take shots you have to hold the button down halfway and wait for the camera to focus then push it down the rest of the way. It isn't terribly difficult but this is annoying to explain to strangers when you're asking them to take pictures of you. The picture quality is excellent as is the screen which is of a good size, bigger than most digital cameras. The video is impressive (stored in a .avi format), although the sound quality was poor on the videos I took (that could be because I took them in a night club though so don't take my word for it on this matter - but after all its a camera, not a camcorder so you can't complain that much anyway, it's good for what it is). The battery charges in very little time, about 4 hours from dead I think. Comes with a 16mb SD card which you really need to replace as this will only store about 10 pictures of the highest quality so get yourself a bigger card, a 1 GB card will store about 450 of the highest quality pictures that this camera will take although it's often not entirely necessary to take pictures of this quality, they'll be fine in slightly lower quality and you'll be able to store a whole lot more pictures (I take them at the next level down from top quality and have room for over 900 on a 1GB card, more than enough). One handy feature shows the amount of pictures you have room for on your memory card at the current resolution in the bottom right hand side of the screen so it's easy to see how much room you have left.

    Overall very impressed indeed!
