Synopsis
Dennis Leary (JESUS' SON, ICE AGE) stars in the FX channel's dramedy RESCUE ME, playing Tommy Gavin, a New York firefighter under pressure from all sides. Still suffering from the events of 9/11, he is haunted by the past while adjusting to the present, which includes a separation from his wife Janet (Andrea Roth). He now resides across the street from her so that he can stay close to his children, whom he bribes to supply him with information as to mom's comings and goings. Tommy's quirky fellow firefighters on Ladder 62 include the compulsive gambler Chief Jerry Reilly (Jack McGee), the handsome but rather light Sean Garrity (Steven Pasquale), cocky, Puerto Rican ladies man Franco Rivera (Daniel Sunjata), and newbie Mike Silletti (Mike Lombardi), who is the brunt of many an initiatory prank. Tommy finds relief from his woes by talking them out with his cousin Jimmy (James McCaffrey, SHE HATE ME) only Jimmy died in the World Trade Center attacks.

Truly great drama
This one was out of the blue. Bought on an absolute wing and a prayer. I had read zero publicity, reviews or anything - just figured it had Dennis Leary in it and he wrote No Cure For Cancer, so it must be alright. Alright? Rescue Me is a revelation.
It follows - primarily - the fortunes of firefighter Tommy Gavin, 9/11 survivor, ex-alcoholic, Irish American, bull blood. Tommy is one messed up individual. It also records the day-to-day fortunes, habits and credo of the other firefighters in his station; each dealing with 9/11 in their own different ways and their own messed up lives.
What singles this series out is the script is so, so witty; written with the darkest, blackest humour possible. The dialogue between the firefighters is snappy and gritty and one emotes with the characters so easily. Tommy himself is a total love or hate him kind of person - which is what makes Rescue Me so good.
I Totally recommend this. Backdraft it is not - more like a cross between No Cure for Cancer and Six Feet Under. Awesome.
Worth a look
Rescue me has perhaps suffered from being on satelite television only as few people have heard of it, let alone seen it. It is however an excellant program, well worth checking out. It tells the story of a New York Fire Brigade crew in the years after 9/11 and manages to combine, humour, action and poignancy to great affect. Well worth checking out
Smart, thrilling & downright hilarious.... loved it!!
FX's 9/11 drama Rescue Me is a refreshing and timely change to the politically correct television seen in recent times. Smartly written and brutally honest, each hour is an uncompromising peek into the lives of a group of New York firefighters post 9/11. Leary is fantastic (take a bow) in the lead role as Tommy Gavin, an unsettled, volatile survivor trying to deal with the loss of loved ones in the attacks and problems closer to family & home. Some may find it exploitive but the makers have undeniably pulled off a riveting mix of drama, tragedy, violence and humour. Bring on the second season!!
