A selection of the books I read in 2009
The Perks of Being a WallflowerThe Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Buy used from: £4.19
One of my all time favourite reads. Beautifully written and chrushingly lonely. Really captures the awkardness of growing up.
Interview with the Vampire: The First Book in The Vampire ChroniclesInterview with the Vampire: The First Book in The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice
Buy new: £5.00 / Used from: £0.01
Who doesn't love Anne Rice? The Vampire Chronicles are her magnum opus, and what better place to start than the beginning?
The Virgin SuicidesThe Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
Buy used from: £0.01
A truly somber read. I can only liken it to a car crash; terrifying but you just can't look away.
Jamaica InnJamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier
Buy used from: £0.01
Du Maurier has a way with words most authors can only dream of, but I found Jamacia Inn unjustifiably predictable.
The Picture of Dorian Gray (Wordsworth Classics)The Picture of Dorian Gray (Wordsworth Classics) by Oscar Wilde
Buy new: £1.99 / Used from: £0.01
Haunting, Poetic, Perfection. You just cannot critisize Oscar Wilde.
The Book of Shadows (Wicca)The Book of Shadows (Wicca) by Cate Tiernan
Buy used from: £0.01
I love the Wicca/Sweep series. I re-read atleast one installment a year. In my opinion, the greatest series for YA readers ever published, and a subtle lesson for all ages about faith.
Pet SemataryPet Sematary by Stephen King
Buy new: £5.96 / Used from: £0.74
Deliciously Horrific. Sends shivers down the spine and makes you smile ear to ear. Genius.
ItIt by Stephen King
Buy used from: £0.01
The book that spawned a million phobia's. My all time favourite book by my all time favourite author. So much more than horror, so much more than genius.
Natural SelectionNatural Selection by Bill Dare
Buy new: £10.99 / Used from: £0.01
Not awful, not great. Some truely, side-achingly funny moments, but some real crap to wade through too. Sort of enjoyable. I might have to re-read it to refine my opinion.
The Hobbit (Essential Modern Classics)The Hobbit (Essential Modern Classics) by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: £4.48 / Used from: £0.01
Everything it's made out to be and more. The Perfect introduction to Tolkien's Genius. Ideally to be followed by the ever raved about 'Lord of the Rings'
Night World: Bind-up v. 1, Bks. 1-3Night World: Bind-up v. 1, Bks. 1-3 by L J Smith
Buy new: £4.27 / Used from: £2.95
I finally read all of Nightworld this year, having loved The Vampire Diaries at school. Honestly, the most exiting books I've read in years. Can't recommend them enough!
The Twilight Saga CollectionThe Twilight Saga Collection by Stephenie Meyer
Buy used from: £37.01
Who didn't catch Twilight Fever this year? I couldn't put it down, but honestly I'm sick of the romantic slant inflicted on seemingly all sci-fi/horror these days. Besides, I like my vampires evil.
The OutsiderThe Outsider by Albert Camus
Buy used from: £0.40
I whole heartedly loved this book, I couldn't put it down or get over how eerily relevent it remains today.
Tuesdays with Morrie: An old man, a young man, and life's greatest lessonTuesdays with Morrie: An old man, a young man, and life's greatest lesson by Mitch Albom
Buy new: £7.95 / Used from: £6.25
I adored The Five People You Meet in Heaven, and was pleased to find this was a worthy predecessor. It did, however, leave me an emotional wreck.
HauntedHaunted by Chuck Palahniuk
Buy new: £5.96 / Used from: £0.62
No one, and I mean no one, can spin a yarn like the long underrated genius of Chuck Palahniuk. Forgot fight club, haunted is the one to read.
The Moth DiariesThe Moth Diaries by Rachel Klein
Buy new: £5.45 / Used from: £0.01
A pleasent suprise, a truly skilled writer and a throughly convincing tale of one girl's decent into what is assumed to be madness. Unlike anything I've ever read.
Let the Right One inLet the Right One in by John Ajvide Lindqvist
Buy new: £3.99 / Used from: £2.99
Never have I been quite so passionate about a book as this. I can't even begin to describe quite how much I adored this book. Forget the film, read this- you will not regret it!
CutCut by Patricia McCormick
Buy used from: £1.42
Another suprise. Quick to read and unbearably engaging.
LolitaLolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Buy new: £5.38 / Used from: £3.33
What can I say that hasn't already been said? Everything a book should be, and more, so much more.
The Book With No NameThe Book With No Name by Anonymous
Buy new: £4.65 / Used from: £0.01
Reads like the demented lovechild of Salem's Lot' and Pulp Fiction. Just extraordinary, left me on the edge of the seat and I'm anxiously awaiting for Amazon to deliver its sequel.
My Booky WookMy Booky Wook by Russell Brand
Buy used from: £0.01
The jury is still out on this one. Wonderful way with words but utterly disorderly prose. More suited as a holiday read than an intellectual get away, I think.
