Customer Reviews
The Floyd on top form.
This review is based upon the old release CD which has the same tracks.
Personally I believe the songs on PULSE are a better starting base for the Floyd beginner than the Echoes: Best Of from the early 2000's. This is due to the trippy 60s tracks being excluded in favour of David Gilmour's guitar driven anthems from the 80s and mid-90s along with WHOLE of Floyd's most experimental album, "The Dark Side of the Moon".
Starting with the eternal classic "Shine On..." the first CD is a collection of Gilmour's greatest hits including the anthemic "Learning to Fly" and "Sorrow" mixed with classics from the Wall, "Hey You" and "Brick in the Wall Pt.II".
However, Disc 2 is where the album elevates to another level. Beginning with an entire performance of DSOTM, the experimental album which really concreted the foundations which Floyd would develop on in the 70s. The CD closes with greatest hits from WYWH and the Wall, check out the extended solo on "Comfortably Numb" and "Money".
Pink Floyd were on fine form throughout these live performances which make the album. The full-time return of Richard Wright boosted confidence compared with the previous live offering, "Delicate Sound of Thunder".
Pink Floyd were a fantastic studio and album band, however these songs evolve in a Live environment. Stick PULSE in your car and feel the energy these talented experienced musicians deliver.
Astounding, Beyond the Heavens......
This album is a hair tingling journey of Floyd's live performances in the 90's.
For any Rock lover there is a SINGULAR reason why this 2CD live album is a must buy. We'll come to that later.....
Pulse is an excellent live album covering a multitude of classic Pink Floyd tracks from Dark Side of the Moon (DSOM) and onwards. With few exceptions the musical quality is sparkling, fresh and scintillating.
CD1 covers the bands post DSOM music with some particularly outstanding performances, noticeably `Coming Back to Life', `Sorrow', `A Great Day for Freedom' and `High Hopes'.
CD2 Dark Side of the Moon live stirs memories of one of the 70's great albums. The band venture skilfully through the full rendition with one major disappointment: `Time'. This live version is so disenchanting that it is rumoured the real Floyd were on secondment at this juncture. Nevertheless during the Finale everything is rectified........
Which brings us to the SINGULAR reason why one should buy this album:
`Comfortably Numb'.
Already recognised as the masterpiece on The Wall `Comfortably Numb' is taken to new heights beyond the Stratosphere, Galaxy and Heavens on this live album. The four minutes guitar solo by Dave Gilmour is simply the best you will ever listen to. Words are meaningless in attempting to describe this uniquely brilliant performance by Gilmour.
I should have been there
Truly, utterly compellingly amazing. An amazing concert. My two uncles who are real music people, say that of the hundreds of concerts they have seen it was the most enjoyable.
Pink Floyd have sold a trillion records not through quiky songs but emotional journeys. Their songs somewhere resonate with many peoples consciences and when they perform live they take it to a new level.
