Keep it up!
NHL 2k9 is here and is a continued improvement on the previous title. I was in two minds whether to go for this or the EA version and it is a tough decision but I will probably get both in the end. They are very different games and so I'm not going to try and compare them, you have to make up your own minds. As for 2K9 well the graphics have certainly improved though I have to say certain aspects of the animations feel rushed and unfinished. The menu's are much easier to navigate though they do take some getting used to. What I really like about the 2K series is that each player actually looks like he does in real life where as EA tend to only photo animate the star players. The control system has been simplified back to a much easier system that does bring the fun back to the game and the pace is slower and more realistic. Goal tending has improved and you can adjust most aspects of the gameplay to suit your personal preferences. The presentation is better and a really nice touch is the highlight options at the end of the game which allows you to watch the goals and even the best moments of the games' 3 stars.
Overall then this is an improvement and worth the money, only dissapointment really is the sloppy graphics which could easily have been avoided. Still an enjoyable hockey experience with fun gameplay!
Great gameplay, lacks features
This game has been criticised by critics but gameplay wise it is actually a very good and fun game. It plays well out of the box but with decent sliders which you can get from various forums the game plays even better. You can make a "super sim" game if you tweak the sliders properly and the sliders do work, very well.
There are a multitude of goals which can go in in this game unlike it's rival where there are very few variables. Whilst comparing it to it's alternative i will also point out that the goalies are 10 times better in this game and difference in player skills are much more apparent in this game.
Graphically the arenas, ice rink and crowd are perfect (very individual to each team too), absolutely amazing however the player models are only ok and the player faces are just awful. The crowd is also the best and most reactive i have ever experienced in a game, they can really draw you in.
Also worth noting is that for once the a hockey games side cam is usable and it is the best cam in the history of hockey gaming.
Winter classic included too :)
It does have it's downsides though as there is a lack of previously involved features such as the fantasy draft, team morale and certain training aspects. The games doesn't show assists with the goalscorer in the in game box score either (poor). Franchise mode is not as deep as before but you still can control all 30 teams.
Bug wise this and 09 have many (shame really). The big one here is in the franchise mode to do with cpu resigning players, it can be worked around but needs to be patched. As 2k patched 2k8 twice i am certain it will be attended to.
I have not gone online yet but from what i have read and heard it is more reliable than 09's but there are not as many people playing. You can play 6 vs 6 as well if you want.
Overall if gameplay is your number 1 priority then you cannot go wrong here, just go onto the big sites relating to this game and use their sliders and you will have a very realsitic and exciting game. Despite it's faults this game is really fun and can really drag you in.
If however you are most interested in the amount of modes, features and options then 09 may be better for you, it doesn't have as realistic or in depth gameplay but there is a wider range of things to do. Both games are really good although sadly both have buggy issues.
