Amazon.co.uk Review
This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can out-shoot and out-sing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honour, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. Calamity Jane won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love", by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Comical Musicals do not get any better
When Doris Day & Howard Keel signed up for this colorful production one could have hardly have imagined that fifty years later this movie would still have the power to enthrall both young and old. I recently made my youngest nephews and nieces "sit through" Calamity Jane and I can assure you it did not take long before there was an absolute silence around the T.V. This musical has everything, a great cast in its prime and some wonderful songs, especialy the timeless oscar winning "Secret Love". This film abounds with energy, laughter, sadness and of course the classic fairy tale ending. They really do not make 'em like this any more. A sure fire 10 out of 10.
One of Doris Day's finest moments...
There are, I think, few that would argue that Day didn't have a beautiful voice and she gets a fine chance to use it here in classic songs like 'Secret Love' and 'Black Hills of Dakota' but her performance as the stubborn tomboy Calamity Jane is just as perfect. This is a comedy musical and Day hams it up but without losing the heart of the character - in amongst the laughter we really feel for poor Jane as she loves and loses then loves again.
Howard Keel is well cast as Bill and his verbal sparring with Calam' in "I can do without you' is one of the film's many highlights.
The film is great fun to watch and I imagine that this film would appeal to all ages - there is nothing in it that would disturb either your young child or your granny.
a joyful and exilerating feel good movie
i have seen this movie many many times and doris day is sensational in it she is vivacious and bubbly and her voice was at its very best at this time she is generous to the other actors in the movie but she still manages to steal almost every scene she is in .........after seeing calamity jane boy do you feel good
