This is a spectacular book guiding you through the circuits, roads and tracks that have helped shape more than a century of motorsport. From the great road races of the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio, to the gruelling hillclimb of the legendary Pikes Peak in the heart of America - "Classic Motorsport Routes" guides you through some of the most spectacular and legendary routes that you can drive today. Top motoring writer Richard Meaden of "Evo" magazine, takes you through thirty evocative routes across four continents. Brilliantly readable and indespensible
Ok, Richard is a buddy of mine, but even so this is a long overdue book from someone who has written about many of these routes in EVO magazine. The sections are easy to consume, excellently illustrated and provide perfect reference to set off and follow the routes yourself. Buy it! Don't think twice, just do it. And if you're looking for a present for the man in your life, then he'll be very pleased to receive this.
A good read, maps not as detailed as hoped for.
Nice book, but to say the maps are detailed and high-quality is overdoing it a bit. From the rally chapters only a few stages are highlighted where a full page map could have displayed perhaps all.
Can be a good start to a great holiday.
A treasure trove of ideas, well written but maps lacking
Richard Meaden created a really, really nice book here. Contained therein are the most famous motorsport routes, for which he provides a context, history, personalities involved, as well as a reasonable description of how these can be travelled today.
The quality of writing definitely mirrors the one he displays in Evo, and the book (assuming you are a car / travelling enthusiast) will no doubt pull you in. For people on most continents there are routes, or sections thereoff, which can be turned into a road trip without too much hassle or over-ambition, and which are likely to remain very memorable - and the author does an excellent job of instilling an absolute need in the reader to go and try them out.
The one area, where the book falls a bit short, as already mentioned, is in the maps department. It really would add a whole layer of quality, if at the back of the book, detailed maps of all the routes were provided. While this is more of an issue for some routes than others (The Carrera being a particularly lacking example in my opinion), it does require that the book is always complemented by other material, if one is to follow and relive the routes exactly.
