Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Though the title of The Black Eyed Peas' suggests their career coming to an end after over 27 million album sales, it actually stands for 'The Energy Never Dies'. The album's producer Will.I.Am has stated that, if anything, the album is the beginning of a new concept, one reflective of the digital download generation. Musically, the group sticks to their established slick, pop-funk sound, with the lead single 'Boom Boom Pow' standing out as a typically boisterous and dramatic hip-hop fusion.

Not traditional Peas, but still pretty good4
Im a big fan of the Peas and loved both their last 2 albums. This one is a little different and I think will be a grower. It's more mature and I think goes back to their original style of Bridging the Gap and pre Fergie days which I wasn't hugely keen on. But its not quite as random and fun as Elephunk or Monkey Business. It's definately a dance album with some major beats so I think will be a great album for the car with the windows down and the sun shining! My general conclusion is its a bit different but I like that. Its good for bands to try something new and develop different styles.

Also, the 2nd disc edition contains 4 new tracks and 6 remixes of previous songs including one for Pump It which I absolutely love. But they are all great and I think for big BEP fans its worth the extra cash.

The beginning of the END5
This may not be a popular view, but every time a BEP album comes out I think it's fresh and new, but a year later I can't be bothered with it because it sounds a bit stale to me. Could be that by naming themselves after food, the Black Eyed Peas have got it spot on - as they are masters at producing fresh new sounds, which (in my opinion) have no longevity to them. If you think I'm talking rubbish by saying this, they've actually acknowledged this is true themselves in a commitment they have made to keep shaking up the production of the tracks on this album and coming up with newer versions through their website.

So then, I find myself yet again loving a new BEP album and wondering if this time it'll last.

This album changes style dramatically, and many people won't like it - but probably just as many people will love it. Boom Boom Pow is not a fluke - the BEPs have definitely gone down the synth/dance route - although there are still moments where the old BEPs of Elephunk hang on.

Standout tracks for me include Boom Boom Pow, Imma Be, Missing You and Meet Me Halfway.

This version has a second CD, with new material and remixes. Does this prove their commitment to revisiting their music and updating it? Perhaps so, or perhaps it's just a promotional disc - you can't read too much into it - just know that it's not some half-hearted effort and it's definitely worth the money if you're into the Peas.

The worst album of 2009 so far!1
`THE E.N.D.' is quite a fitting name for the latest album from the Black Eyed Peas as this is where my purchases of their CDs finish. Back in the day, Will.I.Am, Taboo and Ap.de.AP, the BEP were one of the best groups in hip hop, at such a high level of quality they were even comparable to legends such as De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Jurassic 5, with their fantastic albums Bridging the Gap and Behind the Front. But then Fergie jumped on board and things have gone a little down-hill since (when it comes to music quality and hip hop). Ok, Elephunk and Monkey Business weren't too bad, bringing hip hop to a more mainstream audience with songs like the highly annoying and over-played "Where Is The Love" and more fun tunes like "Let's Get It Started" and although it probably wasn't ever going to be to the taste of real hip hop fans who loved their first two albums, no one can deny that the production quality from Will.I.Am was always at a high level.

So what went so wrong with their new album? Well, for a start it is not hip hop - mainstream or otherwise - this is bad club music sounding like it has just came out of the South of France. Mixing awful electro funk with cringe-worthy synthesized vocals (something that has ruined quite a few hip hop albums recently - Kanye, I'm looking at you!) that I cannot understand for a second how anyone could possibly enjoy it. The first single "Boom Boom Pow" is not a bad tune to be fair but this is as good as it gets. Songs like "Missing You" and "I Gotta Feeling" are so bad that I can imagine even little girls would laugh at these tracks. "Imma Be" is fairly similar to "Hey Mama" and is mildly listenable, if only for the sake of finding one track that I actually like.

Overall I've only had this album for 4 days and already I know I'm never going to listen to it again. Everything about it is so terrible that I am actually embarrassed for the group who for a long time I have had a lot of respect for. Whatever you do, don't buy this album!
