Customer Reviews
Does the job, kinda...
I bought this scanner late last year. It was extremely basic, no 'on-off' button, no 'quick scan' button, just simply a scanner. The look of the scanner is pretty ugly, with the 90's creamy plastic. But who's complaining, its a A3 scanner for under £200.
BUT! I had it all set up ready for it to go and when I had done my few first scans certain areas were not coming out clear. In closer inspection oil from the mechanism of the light had smeared onto the underside of the glass! I couldn't do anything. I was desperate to get some things scanned so i just placed them above where the smear was and the scan that come out were absolutely fine.
I had to send it back because it was technically faulty. I need an A3 scanner still though but as a student and being realistic I can only afford this, so even though I had problems with it first time round, i'm going to get another one because if it comes with out the oily smear this time, it will be perfect for me.
It worked well on a slow windows XP lap top. As its simple it didn't overload the computer and make it crash or anything. The scanning software it comes with is pretty appalling so i used it through photoshop, which worked well.
Bullet-Proof A3 Scanner
I've used Mustek A3 scanners for about 8 years and owned this USB model for three years. They have been totally bullet-proof and Very German in the Reliability Department.
When I recently upgraded from Windows XP to Vista, I just downloaded the Vista driver from the Mustek web-site and it was back to normal. I expect newer models are already supplied with the VISTA drivers on the CD.
Following installation, MUSTEK's own friendly "Jill and John" Front-End software provides the usual Copy, Scan, etc functions and is automatically started whenever the scanner lid is lifted. This was so annoying that I turned the auto feature OFF. I occasionally use the COPY feature which scans a page and immediately prints it on the selected printer. I have used it to print copies of manuals and although it's much slower than a dedicated copier and the copy quality a bit questionable, it's better than not having a copier at all.
I have mainly used this USB scanner to scan original watercolours at 300dpi and it has never let me down. I perform scanning via Paint Shop Pro and there has never been any software conflicts. I use the File/Import/TWAIN/Acquire menu from Paint Shop Pro (other graphics programs have similar functions) to open the Mustek scanning utility.
If the scanner is cold it will then go through a warm-up cycle and although you can over-ride the process, it's not advisable if you want accurate colours. I was once in a hurry and started scanning without the warm-up. The colours were clearly incorrect so I restarted the process and after the warm-up, the colours were spot on as usual.
I always do a pre-scan first and make any adjustments using the supplied software. This allows you to adjust many factors including the size, zoom, resolution, colours (colour match and colour balance), Gamma, brightness, contrast and a host of others too. You can save your own personalised settings using your chosen filename.
When I'm happy with what I see on the screen, I hit the Scan button and this imports the file straight into Paint Shop Pro for editing.
I have never needed to contact Mustek in the UK or Germany over 8 years of ownership so cannot comment on the speed and help quality they provide.
I would thoroughly recommend this scanner which is excellent value for money by providing a reliable A3 scanner at a realistic price.
Good for the money
I had previously had an epson scanner but monney retriscted this purchase a bit more, the scanner build quality is brilliant for the price and it works fine with paint shop pro but you will struggle to use any other specific scanning software with it, photoshop uses it fine too but I DO NOT RECOMEND THE PROVIDED SOFTWARE. Worst software i have ever used with a preview window so feeble you cant see what your getting and sometimes doesnt even show the scanned image after scanning it, in conclusion, scanner great, software rubbish!
