Product Description

The number of prisoners in the UK, USA and elsewhere continues to rise accompanied by growing claims of the reformative effects of imprisonment. At the same time, the post-second world war consensus regarding the damaging effects of institutions has largely faded from memory. This book revisits the important question of whether the prison harms its inhabitants, its employees, prisoners' families, and others, and aims to redirect the conversation among academics, policy-makers and professionals on the effects of imprisonment. It brings together a group of leading scholars to examine the social, psychological, behavioural and emotional impacts of the incarceration experience on prisoners and their families (during and after their captivity) and on society. "The Effects of Imprisonment" will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in this field.

Editorial Reviews

Review
"'an incredibly powerful and robust text on imprisonment. It is, without doubt, a tour de force.' Peter Hamerton in British Society of Criminology Newsletter 'this book deserves to become the standard text on the subject for some years to come.' Maurice Vanstone in Vista Vol. 10 no. 3 'is most timely and well-crafted in its fresh handling of this critical and enduring issue.' Michael Weinrath, University of Winnipeg in The Canadian Journal of Criminology 'extraordinarily important compedium because it looks at its subject in so many different contexts. By doing so, it provides clues and generates hypotheses about the nuances of the consequence of incarceration under varying circumstance.' Gilbert Geis, University of California, Irvine"

My Bible5
This book became my Bible for my dissertation on how prisons, and its effects upon a prisoner then affect resettlement upon release. Both editors are leaders in the field and it has everything you might want on prisons effects upon a prisoner and their manifestations upon release, helped get me a 2.1!
